Lawrence, Kansas, December 1982

When Mary discovers she’s pregnant again, she’s thrilled; they had been trying for some time now, and she can’t wait to tell John the news. He had gone off to work this morning despite fussing over her health: she had stayed in bed this morning, feeling a little sick. She had to shoo him off to work and had told him not to worry with a kiss and a smile. He had a soft heart under his manly and stoic (well, he liked to think so) exterior, worrying worse than a mother hen that she might have caught the flu. But she had suspected it might have been the early symptoms of pregnancy; and what do you know, she had been right.

She wonders how she’ll tell Dean the news that he’s going to have a little brother or sister, how he’ll react, if he’ll be a jealous child or a doting sibling… but knowing her little Dean, he’ll probably be the best brother there is. When she finally tells her husband, John seems to share her opinion, ecstatic as he is to have a second child, gathering her up in his arms and twirling her around, before grabbing Dean as well.

As it turns out, Dean just looks at her stomach curiously before asking how the baby got in there. She doesn’t have the time to answer before Dean asks, looking slightly horrified as a thought crosses his mind, asking if that meant she ate someone. She laughs and ruffles his hair, saying that’s absolutely not the case, and explaining with a book just how it happened.

The reality probably hasn’t sunk in Dean yet, as he doesn’t seem to care that he’s got a little brother or sister on the way, just resuming the elaborate story about his toy soldiers, supported by his bear plush, planning to fight off the aliens once she’s done explaining it to him.

That changes quickly though, because as soon as it sinks in, she has a three years old shadowing her and asking about the baby, or including him (because she’s expecting a boy) in his activities, and talking about everything he’ll teach to his little brother; she doubts there has been a child as excited by the prospect of helping his sibling tie his shoelaces, even if Dean can’t even tie his own right now.

Even on Dean’s fourth birthday, where he would have had every right to be selfish; it’s HIS day after all, yet Dean isn’t really a selfish child, and includes his little brother, as if he was physically there - but he’s not, not yet. That night, when she’s reading him a story, which also has been picked for Sam’s benefit, he insists all he needs is Mommy, Daddy, and Sammy. It makes her heart swell with happiness and she turns around to look at John, who’s standing in the doorway smiling as well.

Dean frequently rests his head to her stomach, to try to hear something, disappointed when he says he’s pretty sure he’s hearing her tummy rumbling for food, even as he presses his hands as well, always pleased when he feels Sam move. If he likes his little brother any more, he’ll have stars in his eyes, but she can’t say she minds. He’s also getting curious as to what Sammy will look like. Life is good to them.

She’s nearing the end of her term, and she has to admit she can’t wait for Sam to actually be there, although that probably has to do with carrying him for nine months now; he’s due any day now, and he’s heavy. John is a bit worried yet excited as well, and Dean… well Dean has been saying to anyone within hearing range that his little brother is going to be there soon, and bragging to Suzy who lives down the street that his little brother is going to be way more amazing in every ways than hers.

She just called Dean downstairs for breakfast when it happens; she can hear him running and warns him to slow down before he trips, when she hears him yelp and fall. Her blood freezes in her veins and she runs toward the stairs when she hears the series of thump, and a crack, followed by no sound at all (why isn’t he crying?!) - arriving to find her baby boy lying down at the bottom of the stairs with his neck at an awkward angle.

‘’DEAN! Come on baby, wake up… please wake up…’’ she sobs, muttering soothing nonsense and pleas to say anything or move, holding her broken child closely, but Dean’s already gone, neck broken by his freak fall down the stairs.

Dean Winchester dies in the Winchester’s house on May 2nd 1983.

Samuel Winchester is born in the hospital on May 2nd 1983, seven hours after his brother dies.

Six months later, there’s a fire in young Sammy’s nursery, and John Winchester barely escapes with his remaining son, at the cost of his wife’s life.
