We've been looking for a dog since February.
We had two not pleasant experiences with the Oregon Humane Society. Unpleasant to the point of me not ever wanting to look for a dog again. Then I thought sometime around Megan's birthday would be a good time to start looking for a dog. I don't know why. Maybe it was the whole birthday thing because getting a dog is absolutely tied up in Megan. Maybe it was that I'd hoped Zoe would be potty trained by then (and she is as of last week). Maybe it was just a time frame I pulled out of thin air.
We've looked at and discussed breeds so much I think I dream dogs. I know Megs does. We even met with a Corgi breeder. Corgis are great dogs. They are great dogs that cost $700 for a puppy.
But every so often I've been checking out Craigslist or Petfinder. Just looking, nothing serious. Once every couple of weeks or so.
Well, for the past three days or so, I've been checking Craigslist pretty frequently. I don't know why. Yesterday, the itch got a little more pronounced and I checked it several times. Same thing today. I even sent a few emails asking for more information on different dogs. I've been getting a little obsessive about it actually.
You know where this is going right? I found a puppy. Half lab, half German Shepard, all black. We drove out to meet him tonight. He's almost six months old, house trained, and crate trained. He needs some obedience training. We'll need to acclimate him to the cat and the bunny (and vice versa). He's a puppy and acts like one, but he's also very smart (and hello! potty & kennel trained!)
There was someone who saw him first (they called, I emailed and then called). I was ready to take the puppy and run, but
rosenthol7 insisted that we let the other family get their shot first (darn his f-ing nice guy-ness!) On the way home, the owners called and said they really want their dog to come live with us because they really liked our family.
So, as of sometime tomorrow evening, we'll have a dog. He's bigger than we'd intended, so that will be an adjustment. He'll need to learn good manners. And I do have a little surgery coming up sometime in the next month or so, but
rosenthol7 will be here while I recouperate (at least for the first super medicated days) and walking will be important to my recovery...so it is all good.
The owners are re-homing their dog because they are expecting a baby very soon and have realized they can't do it all. I was in that place when we found Buddha a new home. So, it just feels right.
I'm using my witch icon because this is just one of those witchy-intuition things that probably only makes sense to most of the people on my friends list. :-)
