Silverchair - Wednesday, 2nd May 2007 - Metro Nightclub, Melbourne

May 02, 2007 19:00

Well, well, well.

I could've used those three cancelled tickets me thinks. But it's probably better to be safe than sorry, and end up with another Ticketek debacle. I mean, all they did was take the tickets off you, and then as people were leaving, they handed them back out. Oh well. I sold the spare ticket to Nick Nick, and the three of us (Carmen, Nick and I) all met up in Melbourne.

Oh... the gig? Twas Silverchair's second night at the Metro.

The Metro is... kind of weird. It's an old theatre converted into a nightclub. It has a certain charm, but it's not overly good for live music. There's too many viewing obstructions, and not enough places to stand. We started off on the second floor, behind a glass window, but the mix in that room was terrible, all bass and drums, and very little guitar. Bah. So we crusaded for a new position... damn hard to find a good spot, too... which put us on the stairs, at the top, at very back. It was kind of uncomfortable, and everyone kept walking up and down the steps... but at least the sound was passable, and the view half-decent.

Shame the band seemed a bit... unenthusiastic? I dunno. Admittedly, the Young Modern songs are a fair bit better live... Young Modern and Mind Reader are both quite excellent, and Those Thieving Birds / Strange Behaviour is a lot less... "naff". Problem was, they front loaded the first half of the set with lots of slower, un-rocking stuff, which although most of it was pretty cool, kind of wasn't much fun. (C'mon Emotion Sickness is freakin' awesome). Fair bit of strobe lights too. The second half though, they picked up the pace, and were quite a bit of fun. Oddly, one of the most energetic moments of the show was a cover.

The thing that bugged me... well, it was that I've got their live album / DVD from the last tour, and it's absolutely fantastic. In that show, they jammed and really stretched out some of the songs, but this time around, they really did nothing like that. (Okay, he did play the guitar solo in The Door with his teeth, though. Heh. And maybe the outro of If You Keep Losing Sleep was extended a bit).

So, did I enjoy it? Yeah, I did, but I've been to better gigs so far this year. I think I ended up expecting too much, and ended up disappointed. The support band was perfectly picked though, and really fit in with Silverchair's style. They were called Dappled Cities Fly, and Nick Nick astutely noted that they sounded a lot like Mercury Rev.

Hey, Nick... did you enjoy the gig? (Despite not knowing many songs!)
