And I'm really glad I'm not the only one who had that reaction! :-D
But really, LoM as it is (not as I would like it to be in my head, where it *is* about Sam) does make a whole lot more sense if you think about it as being All About Gene. Among other things this makes sense of the ending, which as an ending to the story of Sam Tyler can only be read as the happy ending it purports to be with major mental gymnastics (because you need to 'forget' that Gene etc. aren't real to be able to read Sam's decision as a truly positive one). If LoM is all about Gene, though, then it makes sense that a happy ending - the only really happy ending imaginable - would have to involve a return to Gene, i.e. to the real focus of the show and world.
(BTW - in case you belong to the minority who didn't like the ending of 2.08, there's a community devoted to expressing our discontent: http://community.livejournal.com/jumping_off. We're delighted about every new member, because shared anger is... well... more fun. *g*)
