I loved your descriptions in the chapter, they were all spot on. These two in particualar:

Carling cracked open the door, chewing his gum like a wayward cow.
sparing time only for his rarely seen but patented smug grin

You seem to be showing us a shift back to the old dynamics - Gene and Sam working together, Ray resentful of that, Chris optimistic as usual. But contrasting that Gene seems to be leaning towards the appearances are deceptive viewpoint - and so am I. Because although Sam seems to be on the ball your evil nature has fooled us in the past!

Anyhoo, sorry I haven't been commenting lately, work ate my brain. Loving the series, and this chapter is great. Glad to see Sam actually using his brain again, that thing wasn't getting enough exercise. I like the clues that you're throwing in, but I doubt I'll figure what's going on yet.
