As much as it hurts to see the words Sergeant and Tyler next to each other, I have to say that I think Gene did the right thing there. As hard as things have been for Sam, he's not been acting at all responsibly.
When he was rehearsing this in the Cortina he had kept slipping up and saying us. That line is just so real, and very sad.
I can't help wondering whether Sam's demotion will have an effect on his life in 2006. I'd imagine someone is acting DCI for him there, but does this affect it in any way? Probably not, just thinking.
Here's hoping this acts as a wake-up call (NOT in the literal sense!) for Sam and gets him trying to behave more like himself again.
More soon, I hope? ;) Your writing is fantastic and the last line is a total gut-puncher. In short: I love this fic. :D

I have the next part written. I just have to type it and edit sometime today.

And Sam is now a DS! Does this mean that Ray is going to be acting DI, or are the two of them going to end up vying for the position? If that's the case, it really might be just the thing that Sam needs to finally snap to and come out of this...
I also loved the way that Gene had to refer to "them" instead of "us," and the way that he referred to Sam as "future boy." Just perfect!
Another great chapter, and I can't wait for more!

Maybe they should have Survivor: Manchester to see who gets to be the new DI? I'd tune in.
Thank you!!
