Sam nodded, the picture of obedience, and slowly shuffled up the staircase. As soon as he was out of sight, Mrs. Hunt stepped forward and gave Gene a slap on the arm. "You broke your DI!" She accused in her loudest whisper, throwing up her hands.

WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME?
First the "Gene nudged Sam forward. "What did we discuss?" He said sternly. She noticed he was using the fatherly voice he had always practiced but never needed. Sam shuffled forward on his command and wrapped his thin, damp arms around her waist, enveloping her in a tight hug.

" ‘M sorry," he whispered in her ear and she felt his body shake as he started to cry." which, luckily is both adorable and sad. Everything about Sam, Gene and the Missus's interaction in this part is too cute for words, but the practiced but unused fatherly voice broke me.
Then the missus gets to be all kinds of awesome with the "You broke your DI!" and you lull me into a fall sense of security with them being funny and adorable, until Gene has that slip up, and my heart breaks for so many reasons! He's still haunted by the ghost of Stu, and he thinks that fixing Sam will make up for it. I hate that he still hurts so much from his brother, but I think I hate even more that he's sort of doing this for Stu, not Sam. He should know and ( ... )

I'm sorry. It's my inherent evil-ness. I can't control it. And you're 100% right about Gene. He needs to learn the difference between Sammy and Stu.
