Part 2a is here And part 2b...
Ray sat on the wall at the back of the garden, his back to the house. He watched the colours of the sunset flare and fade as the light played on the clouds, taking long drags on his cigarette.
“You think it’ll be okay?” Marty, who was sitting next to him, suddenly asked.

Great plot and very realistic with the details you throw in such as Ray's potential sympathy for the criminals, Ray and Chris relationship and, in fact, everything.

And yes, I think Ray saw Marty as a bit like Chris, only his family were wrong 'uns, so Ray saw him as saveable - he didn't really have a criminal mind or any wish to hurt others.
I'm glad you enjoyed!

An excellent story. Tense and touching in all the right places. Ray's concern for Marty was touching - it shows that as a copper he wants to help people, not just beat up the bad guys.
Sam briefly wondered about the dangers that all the blood posed, even in these years before AIDS became the killer it was in his own time.
That's been bugging me a litle , ever since I watched one of these 'real life' policing programmes, where the the PC was telling a guy to back off because he had blood over his face. Glad you put it in :)
Ray's dream came out of nowhere! I read that Gene was on the ground, then I read it again and thought NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It didn't occur to me that it could be a dream, but I heaved a huge sigh of relief (and felt a little bit silly for not seeing it coming :))
I noticed the little hint towards Sam and Gene, but they were still arguing at the end over whose way was best. Very IC :D
So... to sum up, I love this fic. Thanks for posting :)

As for the blood...it bugs me too, because Sam would have that ingrained in him - and suddenly he's in an era where no one knew about it. A lot of things like that seem sometimes to be missed, both in the series and in fic. I'm sure I miss plenty too, cos I wasn't even born in the 70s, but I like to try XD
I'm really glad you enjoyed this - it means a lot!
Thanks for taking the time to FB.
