If watching Sam walk from the kitchen to the stairs was hard, having to stand by and watch him climb the stairs alone was torture. God, you've really got to admire Gene; and that is actually very parental, standing and watching like that when you want to run and help.
Another brilliant chapter!

Annie's fear about Sam was, for me, the most frightening part of all of this, even more so than the idea of Sam seeing TCG in Gene's house, Sam possibly telling Gene about TCG, Gene possibly beating the crap out of Sam (another cliffhanger! Aack!), and the idea of Merrick coming over. Just the thought that Ray and Annie, and even Chris, could buckle over Sam's sanity and hand him back over, is incredibly scary, and if Gene were to buckle... *shudders*
Gene thinking of Stu when he was helping Sam up, and his reaction to Sam's behavior, was all very well done - the situation is, at face value, a living hell for Sam, but the idea of what it's doing to Gene, and what it's dragging up for him, seems even more hellish, in some ways.
Great writing!

I love playing around with the Gene/Sam/Stu ideas because I think his failure to save his brother had more of an effect on him than we were ever allowed to see.

I hope your listless mood doesn't last long - reading this chapter was certainly a tonic for me after another rotten day

No, the listlessness was just a passing fancy. I'm sorry you had another rotten day. Maybe I could send Gene or drugged!Sam over to cheer you up.
