Oh, all the characters are perfect here; good and grounding to see Gene back in his natural environment again, barking orders.

I love the inset hospital voices, very well done with those. And the creepiness of TCG and the double and the woods and the metaphor and oh, it's just brilliant, every word. :)

It's entirely spooky and wonderful. Sam, in the woods, is so perfectly in character.

I really feel for Chris in his silence; he's an interesting contrast to Gene who blows violently through the story, both in actions and words.

I'm on the re-read now and I have to say, I had forgotten just how brilliant this story is. The medical terminology sounds spot on (not that I'm an expert or anything close, of course - thank goodness for wikipedia, is what I say...) and the characterisation and pacing too - it's like watching an episode on the telly but in your head!
