This is my list of the ten fanworks posted to this community over the past year that have stuck in my head the most. I'm not trying to say that they are objectively "the best", but that for one reason or another they grabbed me especially hard and worked their ways into my psyche. The danger of doing something like this is that I'm picking favorites; I'm leaving everyone and everything else out. Of course I don't mean it like that; I'm just giving extra kudos to the items I'm listing here. There are so many special fanworks that I've loved over the last year and it was tremendously difficult to pick just ten. In particular I hate leaving out
fawsley and
nepthys_uk, since they each posted new fics after a bit of a hiatus, and I loved every bit of it! But again, this was impossible! And if I did it again right now I'd probably change things up!
Wintery shenanigans A very recent post, but so full of life and action and humor and character, and the comic strip format is so rarely done in this fandom, if ever!
One tiny bullet Because I adore everything
talkingtothesky writes, and had almost picked an earlier fic of hers when I realized that this was the one that would stay with me. Geeeeene. So wounded and so convinced of his own immortality!
Curry date Because
fern_tree is the best, and this is so magnificent, so full of character and love and charm and reference to the show, but also a technical tour de force!
Like a bird in the sky Because
little_cello brings such confidence and passion to the fandom, and I got to watch a little bit of this on livestream and was fascinated to see the shapes and textures coming to life! It's so dreamy, so half-real...
Silk Because it's an unusual pairing done to perfection, so obvious and painful and such a great exploration of their fraught relationship.
fightingthecage makes Gene and Jackie spring off the page, and the sex in the Cortina crackles with their conflicting attraction/rage.
Unnatural Because
xysabridde took this oft visited trope (Gene and Sam's first time) and invested it with so much conflicted emotion on Gene's part, such yearning and fear and frustrated wrongness. Plus, top!Sam! Confident that Gene *will* enjoy it, if he just relaxes enough to let it happen!
25 essential Sam Tyler expressions Yes, it's
fern_tree again, but I can't leave this off. This, along with the Gene Hunt expressions, is an absolute classic of the fandom. So amazingly perfect.
What have I become, my sweetest friend Because it's the first alpha/omega fic in the fandom, and it's by the incomparable
lozenger8, and it burned itself into my brain with omega!Gene struggling for his entire life to define himself by something other than his omega status, and alpha!Sam just pushes ALL of my buttons, especially as Loz has made him so perfectly Sam like.
Lonely Because
feriowind, in her brief sojourn in LoM fandom, made a couple of wonderful works. This captures the angst so very well and the details are so perfect and the colors are so vintage.
Full of women: An analysis of episode 2.04 Oh
chamekke, the care and attention you brought both to your analyses of the show and to the women of this particular episode. Cham has done wonders. Everyone should read this. I have not ever read anything as insightful and clever as Cham's posts about this as well as her earlier posts about The Nameless Ones.
The big affair I cannot forget And anyone who's known me for a while knows that I adore
petronelle to distraction. When she writes about a kink she writes about it with such intensity and sensitivity and skill that she makes it belong to the character, part of who they are. While this fic is on one level about age differential, it is far more about destiny and depth and yearning and a love that was meant to be.
