Gene's music tastes??

I’ve finished a fic, & it mentions Gene's luv of Johnny Cash & Leonard Cohen. I can't put a link because it's post-A2A. He gives the main character advice on how to cope with bad memories, saying “push it down & imagine it exploding out of your....”
Gene seems to have had quite a tough life & perhaps be quite depressed underneath. Do you think it's believable as the kind of music he'd like?? That was my only disappointment with LoM - I’d have loved to know his music tastes. Music is very important to me in RL too.
