Sam Tyler guiltily took the scarf out from under his pillow and hugged it. He had found it pushed to the back of one of the drawers in Gene’s desk when he was looking for a file. It had probably been a present from Gene’s wife, stuck in the drawer and then forgotten; he’d seen Gene wearing it a couple of times when it had been really cold, but not recently. Once everyone had gone to the pub he’d sneaked the scarf out of the office and brought it home; a little part of Gene he could cuddle at night.

They’d played near the canal, skidding stones and baring their arses to the geriatrics that’d shuffle by. Stephen’d been like the older brother he’d never had; cockiness, bravado, advice. Didn’t care the others ostracised him. Was good to Stu, which was rare for most everyone Gene knew. He hadn’t seemed like he’d turn into a crook.

Something had happened, along the way. Maybe when Gene wised to the fact he was a poof and said he never wanted to see him again. Stephen embraced a life of crime, engaging in acts that were downright evil. Gene fought him and regretted.

Lovely. And it makes perfect sense as a backstory.

Man, that's great. Complex and frustrating, like life.

Inspired by - but not related to - kuroshokora's brilliant fic, A Case Of Haves Against Haven'ts. Thinking about how things were in the Seventies.

“You filthy bastard! You outright piece of fucking scum!”

Sam is so furious he can barely contain himself. He steps forward again and roars in Carling’s face.

“That girl was innocent! Never put a foot wrong in her life! You heard her mum - 'my Susie was a good girl, she just wouldn’t!' Well, she fucking did, didn’t she! And it’s your fault!”

Carling’s backed against the wall by this time, nowhere else to go. He stares up at Sam in anger.

“It’s not my fault the silly bitch topped herself! I told her I’d help her get rid of it!”
