Recommendations Week: Crossovers

Nov 08, 2008 23:35

The recommendations topic today is - Crossovers.

These are stories that combine two or more fandoms' characters and settings. Examples are; Life on Mars/Doctor Who --- what happens when the Doctor meets Sam? [Usually, it would appear the answer is 'angst' and 'sex'.] A fan fic written about Life on Mars by Jeremy Clarkson. You need to think of Gene Hunt as a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. All the style and charm you would expect from a man of his nature, but a surprising amount of substance as well. He might set you back a bit, but once you were riding him, you knew it was worth it.

Please copy and paste the following template into a new comment (if you're reccing more than one, obviously, paste it a few times):

title of fic by [insert author name]

Why I recommend this fic:

Remember, you can rec the same fic as someone else, either by commenting to their comment with why you like that same fic, or still using it in your own comment. However, please remember not to rec something that's been recommended in previous recommendations fortnights. You can view the entire list here, courtesy of m31andy who deserves much love.

5 or less fics per person - even if you're agreeing with someone else's rec.

Two anomalies (what’re the odds?) by thirteenlives
Rating/Notes/Warnings: "Character death, images not advised for squeamish readers", Crossover w/ Dr Who season three, sam/martha
Why I recommend this fic: I just love it, funny, sweet and tragic.

The girl from tomorrow by zauberer_sirin
Rating/Notes/Warnings: "NC-17 for, rather explicit sex"
Crossover w/ Dr Who season three, sam/martha
Why I recommend this fic: Beautifully written, I love the partitioned style of it. It's extremely funny in parts but also heartbreaking. Characterizations are perfect and the author makes the pairing work so well you'll wonder why there isn't more of it in the fandom.

So Sit On Top Of The World by arewewinning
Rating/Notes/Warnings: PG. Doctor Who/Life On Mars crossover. Spoilers: Everything for both.
Why I recommend this fic: Donna Noble, Gene Hunt. The fic that made me believe.

More Things Than Are Dreamt Of by dew_chan
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Gen. Lom/Torchwood/Who. SPOILERS for the second series finale of Life On Mars, teeny spoilers for the Aliens Of London and Christmas Invasion episodes of Doctor Who, and for the basic premise of Torchwood.
Why I recommend this fic: Because Sam asked Captain Jack a question and broke my heart.

Life on Earth by ariafic
Rating/Notes/Warnings: PG. Life on Mars/Doctor Who.
Why I recommend this fic: Because while everyone and their sister have a version of reality where Sam Tyler is really the Master, this one manages to give it a happy ending. No, really. I love Sam's special brand of crazy, and how the Doctor is checking up on him. I love Annie - who feels very in-character here - and the creepy test card girl, who, in a twist of authorial genius, sounds like the Toclafane. Just made of awesome, really.

One More Dream, One More Goodbye by finkpishnets
Rating/Notes/Warnings: PG-13. Life on Mars/Doctor Who; Donna/Gene. Spoilers for S4 of Who.
Why I recommend this fic: Because it's Donna and Gene! I cannot even tell you how much I adore their banter - "you didn't deny he's a div" - or how awesome they are together. Donna and Gene's chemistry is off the charts, and there's a lovely undercurrent of friendship between Donna and the Doctor that's so very canon.

Oh! You Pretty Things by invisible_lift
Rating/Notes/Warnings: NC-17. Life on Mars/Torchwood; Chris Skelton/Jack Harkness.
Why I recommend this fic: Besides my desire to read Jack/Everyone (it's canon!), I love the depiction of Chris in this story - the way Jack encourages Chris and pushes him into situations where he's uncomfortable in signature Jack fashion. The man's got all the tact of Cordelia Chase, and I love the way Chris reacts. This is such a fantastic look into a character that seems to get very little attention from fandom - this story could have easily been Jack/Sam or Jack/Gene, and I adore that it's Chris Jack singles out.

I’m a Stranger Here Myself by draycevixen
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Green Cortina
Why I recommend this fic: I don’t want to give too much away in case anyone hasn’t yet read it. It’s a wonderfully original piece written from an unusual pov. Drayce nails the style of narration perfectly, and the outsider’s observations on life in 1973 and the various team members encountered are a delight.

Also recommended by jean_geanie, who said: The tone and narration style just make this a gem.

William and the Detectives by fawsley
Rating/Notes/Warnings: White Cortina
Why I recommend this fic: Yes, I know a crossover between a childhood cast of LoM and Just William sounds cracktastic - and it is - but it’s also brilliantly funny. Who could resist Sammy and Ivanhoe the Police Cat, Eugene fending off the advances of Violet Elizabeth Bott, and more gobstoppers that you could shake a stick at. Go on, treat yourself :)

Same old same old by dock_leaf
Rating/Notes/Warnings: green Cortina
Why I recommend this fic: Another LoM/Doctor Who crossover, and a wonderfully cracky one which all results from that time Gene locked Sam in the boot where Sam discovers that Tina has what might be called hidden depths. Zed gets the characterisation spot on, especially The Doctor, and the whole thing is a snort!giggle fest from start to finish. Plus someone doesn't approve of Gene's loafers and it isn't Sam.

Please keep in mind that I live in Australia and shall therefore likely be asleep whilst many links are posted, so if the post isn't updated straight away, don't worry, it will be!
