Pro Patria Mori by fandomatemylife/taurenova
Rating/Notes/Warnings: PG-13, Implied Sam/Annie, Gene -> Sam UST
Why I recommend this fic: I wasn't sure whether to put this here, or in 'One of a Kind', because it belongs in both. Pro Patria Mori focusses on [somewhat unrequited] relationships between Sam and Gene and Sam and Annie, shown from both Gene and Annie's points of view, all to a backdrop of World War I. This story is so rich. It combines historical detail with heartfelt emotion, a sense of not knowing anything, and some of the best Gene characterisation ever seen, ever, let alone in an AU. It's involving, it's chilling, it's heartbreaking and I love it to teeny tiny pieces. I beta-read the story for taurenova, and my immediate response was the uncouth but heartfelt "holy motherf---ing shit, this is brilliant."

Dinner Date by mikes_grrl
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Brown Cortina, Sam/Gene/Missus, and I quote the warnings verbatim: "Secks! Yorkshire Pudding! …and a little bit of angst…"
Why I recommend this fic: This is Mikey at her finest, taking a concept that would send any other writer into spontaneous smutgasm and instead crafting something incredibly well-considered that makes every character a full-blooded being complete with doubts and insecurities. Yes, these three have gorgeous, gorgeous sex, but I reread it for the characters, especially Sam's loneliness in this one, which is simply heartbreaking at times.
House of Sin by mikes_grrl
Rating/Notes/Warning: Brown Cortina/NC-17+, Sam/Gene/Annie
Why I recommend this fic: Previous rec aside, let it never be said that Mikey can't turn out one brain-scorcher of a PWP as well. The characterizations are still spot-on as usual, and at 5400 words this is the perfect, slow-building, smut-happy threesome that a reader can just curl up into.

Why I recommend this fic: I know how hard she worked on it and how worried she was, and I'm so glad of the positive reaction it got, it deserved it and not only because it's smoking hot.
