[Not really] the American Life on Mars

Amid the discussion of the US remake (and yes, I agree with the moderators that such discussion should be gently shifted over to lom_usa now), it occasionally drifts through my head that the remake isn't really necessary. Because the US has already had Deadwood.

I don't know how many people will have seen Deadwood, as I'm not sure how widespread HBO ( Read more... )

bizarre ramblings, genre: crossover

You make some valid points about the similiarities between LOM and Deadwood; still I think the underlying themes of these two shows are quite different. But hey! I'm sure we agree they are both fantastic shows, well written, visually striking, with memorable characters. Thanks for the reminder, BTW, I still haven't watched Season 3 of Deadwood!

Season 3 isn't quite as good as Season 2. But then very little is, and it's still well worth watching. I'm so sorry we never saw how things worked out in Season 4, as there was a clear story arc.

I'm a BIG Deadwood fan and I like this analysis a lot. Now I'm dying for some kind of time travel scenario that would allow Gene Hunt to meet Al Swearingen, just so they could have a cock-sucker off, if you know what I mean.

Any argument against the need for the on-coming travesty is a good one.

Interesting -- Deadwood is one of my favorite shows as well, and your analysis certainly makes sense.

Hmmmm, I've heard of this show before (had a few fans of it in college) and now I'm definitley seeking out the DVDs.

Plus, we Yanks just had our "Life on Mars": Journeyman, and it was awesome in it's all-too-short run. Yet another victim of the writers' strike, sadly.

Oh yes, I think a fellow Blake's Seven fan recommended that. I wonder if it will ever turn up in the UK?

Deadwood is a strange show; it took me a while to tune into it, but then I found it addictive. It's played in a very theatrical manner. Nearly all the characters are historical (I think Seth's love interest is the primary invention, as they were clearly desperate to work in a few women who weren't whores). Though one of my favourites is the probably fictional Richardson, a batty old waiter who worships a giant pair of antlers.

Deadwood and Life on Mars are both brilliant shows - well, you know I think that. They both give me a sense of depth and intensity I don't get out of much television. The Seth/Al relationship didn't remind me of Sam/Gene, but now I've got to think of it. The fight between Seth and Al that commences season 2 is wonderful - welcome to fucking Deadwood.
