This was inspired by French class a few days ago. My friend and I were playing mind games with each other - twas lots of fun.
Title: Green Glass Door
Author: Judas
Rating: PG
Pairing: Parris/Joseph Putnam
Summary: Parris is having fun giving poor Joseph riddles.
Notes: Lame and kind of nerdy, the riddle itself is rather obvious for the readers to figure out. It's really one that is meant to be said and not written so please don't think Joseph is too much of an idiot for not figuring it out immediatly.
"A kitten can go through but a cat can not." Sitting at Putnam's table, a warm mug of ale before him.
"Sorry?" Joseph blinked, confusion evident on his face.
"A puppy can go through but not a dog." The ale was sipped as a slow smile spread on his face.
"Go through what?"
"The Green Glass Door." Parris grinned, "what else can go through?"
"A child?" Joseph set his apple down, half-finished.
"No."
"But innocence, the young are more innocent than the older, kittens are the young form of cat."
"Innocence can go through." Joseph growled and downed the remainder of his ale.
"Samuel it's too late for mind games." Parris refilled Joseph's mug and pushed the bowl of blackberries forward.
"What else can go through?"
"A forest?"
"No, but a tree can." Another frustrated growl.
"My mind doesn't work like this. I don't get it." A slip of paper was passed over the hardwood, spider script across it.
Kitten
Puppy
Innocence
Tree
"Look at the words, what do you notice?" A sly grin that Joseph wanted to wipe off the older man's face.
"Nothing, they're just words."
"Words, words, words. Very important things, but these ones are special."
"How?" The paper was pulled back and more words scrawled on it.
Grass
Good
Letters
Room
Seed
Happy
"Look closely but not too closely, it's fairly obvious."
"Fairly obvious," Joseph mimicked as he snatched the paper back. "Perhaps for an educated man, a properly educated man." He bowed his head and looked the list over. "Grass comes from seeds, happy and good-"
"Too close." An irritable sigh.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Just look." He did, shaking his head unsure of what the older man was up to. "I can go in."
"Can I?"
"No." Joseph scowled.
"Why not?" A stretching arm, black drops on the table and two names on the paper.
Putnam
Parris
"Our names is why." Joseph stared. Both had P's and an A. P-A-R-R-I-S double letters. K-I-T-T-E-N double letters again.
"I get it, all words with double letters can go in." Parris smiled seeming pleased with himself.
"Exactly." The younger man reached forward and picked up a berry.
"Can blackberries go through?" He was leaning across the table, a sly smile on his lips and the berry against Parris's mouth.
"Yes." The berry slipped past the red lips followed by a finger.
"Excellent." A grin as another berry was pushed into the reverend's mouth followed by Joseph's lips pressing against Parris's.
