It was always kinda nice to have winter break actually be a break in between semesters-classes change and you ain’t gotta worry about any sort of work-time just to chill and stare at the Christmas lights, make some extra cash, try and get back to Dad and the twins for awhile. This whole thesis process’s thrown all that for a loop, though. I will have that to take care of next semester, and if I don’t use this month “off” to get shit taken care of, I dunno if I’m going to get it all done in time. It just seems kinda dumb, is all, that I want to be a detective and I have to write a big fucking paper. It ain’t that I can’t do it or that it won’t come out good, but it just seems a little overkill.

What I’m trying to do, so maybe this doesn’t turn into some big thing about law, is to make it more like a proposal for a local plan of action that can then be applied to any major city. Plan of action as in how to minimize the number of violent crimes and create effective “neighborhood watch groups”. That kinda stuff doesn’t generally work very well in an urban landscape for various reasons, but I think it can be modified. I know I mentioned violent crimes, but I think when you put a plan into action to limit that, you also, by default, have to address a lot of other common issues-who are the victims of violent crimes? Why are they victims? We only really notice the important people who get hurt, when realistically, the largest number of criminal offenses take place in the home (domestic violence) or are committed against sex workers (prostitutes) and the homeless. And you can’t separate violent acts from drugs, either.

I guess I’m getting myself in over my head. How do you make victims not victims? You gotta take a look at homelessness and prostitution. This is why I’m gonna be doing research all break. The chick down at the library (alright, she ain’t a chick anymore really, unless 60 year old ladies are still chicks) has a hold on some microfiche and independent research done over the last twenty-five years in the city. I’m gonna take a look at that, isolate a few incidents as examples, and go from there.

And eventually make this a “global” plan of action. National. Whatever. Christ.

Won’t happen again, Mom.
