IT'S OVER!!!!!
IT'S OVER!!!!!
For those of you who have been following the saga of the Crooked Debt Collection Agency you will be happy to know that the quest is over, and I reign triumphant.
The final chapter was kind of anti-climatic. The fourth "law office" acting as a front for this agency called me a few weeks ago saying the same thing: "You owe us 4200 dollars, how much do you want to settle for?" I gave the standard reply: "I DON'T owe you that much, look at your documentation. The three previous people must have blatantly ignored my comments in the hope that if they keep pressuring me, I'd give in. Well, I didn't.
In walks Krystal. Miss Krystal was the lady I talked to last, and when I said that above comment, she actually appeared to be verifying my claim. She came back to me and said, "Well, it seems you might be on to something. I'm going to have to verify with the original creditor to see what the actual number is, cause obviously we have no evidence to back up the claim we are making. Be aware, that if I do find the number, and it is 4200 dollars, you probably won't be able to go as low as the 2000 dollars we are currently offering."
I told her it was fine, and go ahead and look. I already did a pretty extensive search through Chase and could find nothing other than the last few missed payments from when they stopped the automatic deductions.
Today I get a call from her saying she couldn't find anything and wanted to negotiate a lower number. She said CA would probably not go as low as 950 dollars (what I rightfully owe) because of 3 years worth of lawyer fees, etc. I told her fine, call them and offer 1000, and if they wanna go higher, let me know. She came back and said it was too low, I told her to go up to 1200. She called me back and said their last offer was 1500, and I just took it. I probably could have gone lower, but at this point 500 dollars is not that bad considering all the pain that we all had to go through to get to this point. Also, I didn't want to have them refuse and have to go through this whole process over again; I just wanted it done.
So yeah. Lesson learned: If you are in the right, and you have the evidence to back it up, don't quit. Keep charging till you get what you deserve.
