I had the same thought when I first came across this story. And it seems rather strange to weigh it sitting on top of a toy anteater.

I think the stuffed toy was there to emulate the anteater's mother.

Seeing how much it likes to cling to what I presume is its mother, I suppose the toy anteater is to keep it still while it's on the scales. Otherwise it'd try standing up again. ;-)

But anyway. I want several.

That kinda makes sense, but it still looks a bit precarious. It was cool when the mother was climbing up a person with the baby on her back. Presumably these anteaters belong to the arboreal Tamandua species.
