Beginning
Max knelt at Magda’s bedside and exchanged the cool cloth on her forehead for another one. Her fever would break soon; it had to. Her fever would break and they would start their new life together. And then everything would be okay.
Magda murmured in her sleep for a moment before she started to toss and turn as the fever dreams took hold again.
Max wrapped his hands around one of hers, brought it to his face to gently kiss her knuckles and whisper, “Shh, you’re okay Magda, you’re not in the camps anymore. We escaped, together. We’re free. We can begin a new life here.”
