Old synths require work and lots of, well, understanding. I have a Roland JX-10 that responds well to the occasional whack to the upper panel when the readout goes dim. I have a ESQ-1 that is held together with sewing pins and electrical tape. It's in my nature to tinker with things, but I realized a while ago that I don't trust old gear much, especially old microprocessor-controlled polysynths. Too many discontinued components slowly wearing out in those things. I've decided to leave those keyboards to the next generation of garage musicians and budding repairmen and get a few new-ish synths.
