The problem with including so much in one post is that post limit concerns make me cut things out and forget things I would otherwise talk about. So I'm working out now:
Favorite Books
1). Luther: The Calling by Neil Cross -- I didn't expect to enjoy a prequel novel to the TV show. Just describing it as such sounds stupid, but this book surprised me. Cross's prose was straightforward and yet capable of provoking enough emotion that there were times when I had to stop reading, because I thought I was going to be sick.
2). The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling -- I wanted to love this, and I'm not sure that I did right away... or ever. It grew on me though, and by the end, I was pleased that I had stuck with the novel. I suspect I'll like it more when I read it again.
3). Blue Nights by Joan Didion -- I didn't like this as much as Magical Thinking, but it's Joan Didion, so you can't go wrong there.
4). Roseannearchy by Roseanne Barr -- the cover is NAGL, but the text itself was interesting, and let it be said: she can still tell a damn good joke.
... and now I'm drawing a blank on everything else I read, lmao. Between the scripts I read and the books I stopped reading*, it's hard to remember the good ones. I suppose this is an indication that I should keep better track of what I read, so that my list isn't a sad ass mess at the end of the year. (probably won't happen)
Worst line read of the year? "And Mr. White, who was actually black." The sentence continued after that point, but I was like NOPE GOODBYE.
I was going to elaborate on some of the points I made re: dicksplashing fuckwalruses but ehhh. As is the case with a lot of people, family is complicated, and I'm not sure I have the energy to explain that mess in full, lol. I just thought the rule was if there was a truly serious problem, you were supposed to set the bullshit aside and rally around the person in trouble (even if it's just in a small way). My mistake. So moving on... (at least until it pisses me off again)
