The moments after she had heard Robert’s voice on the other end of her phone were crystal clear and sharp in her mind. The call to the NYPD to report Bree missing, the call to work to explain a family emergency in New York, and the call to Wilson to try and explain how a man she had killed months ago now had House’s daughter. She had driven all night to New York after that and muscled her way through to the NYPD detective that had taken her call.

None of them really understood why she was taking everything so seriously. Bree had run off to New York on her own in the first place and she had let her. Murphy didn’t have time to explain their family dynamic. Her somewhat decent reputation with the NYPD allowed her a certain level of interference with the investigation, which was busy following credit card receipts across the city. It was all too slow for her, though she knew the cops were doing the best they could and at the same speed any missing persons investigation would go. Her nagging sense of responsibility, that somehow this was all her fault, made her need things to go faster. In the end, she knew there was only one way to make things go faster.

She went to one of the sites where they found one of his victims. The ground was wet with summer rain and her boots slid a little in the mud but she found a spot a reasonable distance from anyone hearing and took a deep breath.

“Come on, you son of a bitch, I know you’ve been waiting for me,” she said loudly into the wind. “I’m here. Let’s talk.”

Five minutes went by before he did show up, just appearing inches from her right shoulder.

“Hello, Connie, nice of you to call.”

She flinched slightly in surprise before she turned to face him, “I want her back.”

“Of course you do, but I don’t want to give her back.”

Her fists clenched inside her jacket pockets. She swallowed the desperate fear and panic back. This was not a time for her to lose control.

“Let’s trade.”

Robert seemed genuinely surprised by that.

“You’re not just going to hand her over, I know that. So, let’s trade. Whatever it takes. Me for her if it comes down to that. If I can manage it, I’ll do it. Agreed?”

She was aware that she was signing her soul over to the devil. She could be more patient and wait for the cops to find Bree. She could maybe fly Harry in to New York and have him track her but all of that would take time and time was no on her side. The longer Robert had Bree, the closer he came to killing her. So a deal with a devil and one step deeper in the abyss.
