Just Muse Me: Fun Times

“It would be more fun to stick my hand in a tank full of sharks than sit here all day long.” Kirmani muttered, the words forming a little cloud of steam in the cold SUV.

Murphy silently agreed. Stakeouts in winter sucked. There was nothing worse than being stuck in a small cold space with no heat. Her legs were cramping, her ass was asleep and her fingers were stiff because her blood had probably frozen. She had curled up into herself as much as possible, but it was no use. Chicago’s bitterly cold winds easily passed through the steel and fiberglass of her SUV like it was a wiffle ball. Days like this, she hated being a Chicago cop.

“The Shedd’s not to far from here. What do you say, boss? We can drive over, park illegally and jump in the Wild Reef exhibit.”

“I think the sharks will wait for us to defrost first.” She answered with a small smirk. At least being stuck with Kirmani was entertaining. When it wasn’t annoying. Sometimes they just got sick of each other after sitting around being miserable for so long. When that happened, they didn’t talk and the cold seemed to intensify. As long as he was talking though, Kirmani could distract them both from the cold.

“N’aw, they’d go right for us. I saw it on the Discovery channel, a big shark just bit a frozen tuna in two. Only took half a second. We’d be fine.”

“Besides getting bit in half, sure.”

“Okay, so there’s a catch, but personally, I’d rather get eaten by a shark instead of freezing to death.”

Murphy risked hypothermia and pulled back the sleeve of her coat to check her watch. “Only two more hours and we’ll be relieved.”

“And then we’ll spend another two hours melting before we spend six hours chasing down leads on other cases, which means in and out of the car.” Kirmani pointed out. “We’ll still freeze. It’ll just take longer. That shark tank’s looking more and more appealing isn’t it?”

“Yeah, so I can throw you in it.” She reached out and shoved his shoulder lightly, “Stop being a baby. You’ve lived here for how long? You should be used to this by now.”

“It’s my ancestors, boss. Iranians are not a cold weather people. Not like you Irish.”

“My mother’s side is from the tropics.”

“Yeah, but you’ve got the Irish last name, it means you’re inclined for cold weather.” Kirmani paused for a second. “And whiskey.”

“True, on the whiskey at least.”

“All I’m inclined towards is sand and dry heat.”

“You’re in the wrong part of the country, Kirmani.”

“Don’t I know it.” He let out a big sigh, creating another puff of steam. “There’s one thing the cold’s good for though. When the sharks take my hand I won’t feel it.”
