“What? It’s… it’s hospital noise. Boss, what’s up?”
“Look, go talk to the witness I’ve got to… just give me a minute.” She held up a placating hand and followed her ears. Kirmani called after her, but he gave up after trying twice. He knew better when she had an inkling. That’s why she liked Kirmani as a partner. He understood how she worked. Her inkling was music. She could hear “John the Revelator” on piano. It was out of place in a hospital, especially in the teaching wing. Alright, this was Princeton Plainsboro and things were strange in general. It didn’t mean she couldn’t be curious. She had a good guess about what was causing the music. That made it all the more interesting.
She pushed the door open to the classroom she guessed the music was coming from and stuffed her hands in her pockets when she saw she was right. House was at the piano, though he had stopped when she entered.
“What are doing here?” He asked, narrowing his eyes slightly.
“Stabbing victim in the ICU, it’s my job to find out why someone wanted him dead.” She started down the steps towards the front of the classroom.
“ICU is two floors up and on the other side of the building.” He turned away from the piano completely to face her. “You’re really bad at directions, aren’t you?”
“My partner’s going to talk to the guy.” She stopped at the last step, “I was overcome by the urge to write. I think God’s calling to me.”
“So why aren’t you naked and ashamed?” He cocked an eyebrow at her.
“What have I got to be ashamed of?” She countered. Okay, so she’d left her partner with the work because she wanted to flirt with House. She was a terrible Lieutenant and her Captain was going to give her a long lecture if he found out, but this was fun. Since meeting him, she’d been interested in fun more than before.
“Well, I’m not a plastic surgeon but I could make some suggestions.”
She chuckled and shook her head, still smiling. “I like John the Revelator. Why’d you stop?”
“Because I didn’t want an audience.” House grabbed his cane and got to his feet. “You should get to work.”
“So should you.” She was tempted to walk towards him, but she was always bridging the gap between them. She would like it if he came towards her for once. Since he had gotten to his feet, she could guess that’s what he intended. She was slowly figuring him out because he limped towards her instead of away. There was another door, he could leave, but he came to her instead. “No dying people to save?”
“I was overcome by this sudden urge to write.”
“God’s not calling you.”
“No. He’s not.” House stopped in front of her, looking down slightly. “Why are you here?”
She leaned up a little and kissed him, lingering for just a moment before drawing back. “Hallelujah.”
