Criminal Masterminds: Dirty Cops

Give a man power, he's bound to abuse it. Have you ever had to arrest a dirty cop? How did it make you feel?

Is this the same line as absolute power corrupts absolutely? Because, honestly, all it takes is a little power in the wrong hands and anyone’s going to go corrupt on you. It’s not the power, but the person and how they use it. Anyway, I’m off topic. Yes, I have arrested a dirty cop, ex-Sergeant Darren Munzer.

Munzer was head of the Gang Unit. For a time he was the Chicago Police Departments’ shining glory. He was in the paper nearly every day with some sort of story about kicking down doors, dodging bullets and generally being the kind of action hero you only see in movies and on TV. Before I arrested him, I didn’t think he was a bad cop. A risk taker, a glory hound, yeah, but dirty? I wouldn’t have guessed it. Munzer made the same mistake that a lot of criminals make, they underestimated me and Harry.

I called in Harry to consult on the same thing I called Munzer for. This weird brand found on the back of a man who had drowned in the middle of Chicago, miles from the river and the lake. It got even weirder when Butters said the water in the victim’s lungs was salt water. The victim was connected to gang activity and I wanted Munzer to give me the run down on that. What I got was kicked off the case and then brought back on in the end when I arrested Munzer.

I won’t go into details about that, but really, I have no regrets about arresting Munzer. The man was a dirty cop, killing criminals who had escaped justice. He’d crossed the line between cop and vigilante. He needed to be stopped and I stopped him. That’s all there is to it. I know some cops in the CPD see me as a rat. I don’t care. I stopped a bad guy. The fact that he carried a badge didn’t change anything for me. My job is to stop killers and that’s what I did. End of story.
