Snake had used the fastest method he knew to travel, Lucifer. He had bribed the bastard into doing it because of the baby though it left Snake feeling uneasy that Lucifer was willing to give without pay. Snake stood for a moment in the nearby alley where the angel had left him. He still had the after effects of the bright light from traveling. The splotches of color in his vision were fading but he had enough on his mind that he almost didn't notice.

This was a new place and Plissken took it in stride though he moved slowly. His eye was watching everything as he descended into the bar. He was glad to see Murphy had taken the back booth. He would rather be in the shadows. He didn't say anything at first just walked up and took a seat across from her. He was still distracted by his thoughts about Lucifer and beyond them to the rest of his family. Snake was nervous and anxious. It showed even if he was trying to hide it.

Murphy raised an eyebrow at him and slid the second glass of ale to him. Something wasn't right with Snake. She wasn't exactly sure what caused it but something was definitely wrong.

"You all right?" She asked, studying him critically. "You look like hell."

Snake looked up at the glass and then farther to her. A small smiled cracked into his expression.

Could say that when Lucifer's giving out free gifts and I don't know why.

Snake sipped the ale and smiled. You don't look much better sweetheart.

"Nothing's for free." She said. It made her suspiscious too, but she couldn't offer any good advice so she just shrugged.

"You're such a charmer." She sighed, "It's been a rough couple of days." which was putting it lightly, but really she didn't need to say anything detailed yet.

That's what I'm worried about.

Snake grinned. Always out for charming the pretty girls.

He sobered a bit and sighed. You and me both sweetheart.

A dark expression passed over Murphy's features. She could still smell the smoke and see the thing that had attacked her reaching out for her. Douglas had died laughing.

"I killed a man." She spoke very softly, with no inflection in her voice. "I killed a man and I'm not sure why I did it."

You do know why. Snake took a drink of his beer. Trust me you're just blocking. Once you calm down you'll remember why you pulled the trigger. Pretty common for people to experience it.

She frowned down at her beer, "No, I really don't. He wasn't the immediate threat. There was no way he could get to me. And I still shot him."

She sighed, "It doesn't feel right to me, what I did."

Our guts pick up on more than our eyes. Snake leaned back. Tell me what happened. What was this guy like? What was the situation?

"You sound like my therapist." She muttered before taking a long drink from her ale.

When she set the drink down, her expression was carefully blank. "Kirmani and I had to serve a warrant, pick up a guy for murdering his wife. I sent Kirmani upstairs while I searched the basement. He was there, chanting, something. He... he set a fire."

She hadn't told anyone but Harry the next part and it obviously cost her a lot to tell Snake.

"There were faces in the fire. Like children, but they didn't have eyes and their teeth.... one of the faces came out of the fire and became this... this thing. It attacked me, but..." she started playing with the ring on her finger but didn't seem to notice the action, "But it got scared off. I should have shot it, not the suspect."

I am trained in advanced interrogation. Not surprised. Snake smiled drinking as he listened.

Look. I'm going to be blunt with this sweetheart. You just said he started the fire, right? and the fire came at you. You knew he started it so that's probably why you shot the bastard.

Snake smiled leaning forward on the table. Beside you're an intelligent enough woman to know bullets aren't going to do shit to a fire.

She glared at him. If there was anything she hated, it was being patronized. She wasn't looking for sympathy or a shoulder to cry on, but she wasn't looking for someone to talk down to her either.

"It had bones, it had a skull. I should have shot its' skull as easily as I shot his." She said firmly. Killing anyone, even with a reason bothered her like wearing an itchy sweater. She could do it, but that didn't mean she liked it.

Murphy. Snake looked at her with a stern but almost caring expression. I know what you probably saw. It might have looked like bone but I bet it wasn't.

Shooting it wouldn't have helped you. You know it. You already told me that he was the one creating the fire. You know and you're denying it.

He wasn't intending to talk down to her but he didn't like watching her deny this.

She was quite for a long time, hundreds of things going on behind her eyes before she let out a long shaky breath.

"When I was twelve my mother left, just left. Everything I knew about the world got turned upside down." She met his eye, "I'm there again. I rebuilt my world after that, I had rules, I had security. Now I'm twelve again. I don't have the power to fight this stuff. It's going to take awhile for me to get used to that."

Snake smiled almost grinning. I seem to have a knack for helping scared twelve year olds. I got three of them more or less.

Snake sighed and ordered Murphy another drink and himself a scotch. I can show you some of what you might have seen. I can't create people but I think I can do something similar.

She narrowed her eyes at him. She hated it when people treated her like a kid. "Just because I feel that way doesn't mean you can treat me like it."

She set the other drink aside. She wasn't in the mood to get drunk really. At least night yet. "No thank you. I don't want to live that moment again except in my head. Harry's helping me as much as he can."
