Just Muse Me - Training Day

The crime scene tape snapped and twisted in the high winds that raced across Chicago in the middle of winter. They had been roaring along all day and Murphy barely paid any attention to them anymore. The dancing tape was a little hard to maneuver but she ducked under and then quickly sidestepped as it bowed out as if it was chasing after her. A uniform wrestled it back into place around the waist high iron gate while Kirmani ducked and followed.

They stood together outside the one story ranch house and shared a look. It was a small, almost instantaneous debate about who was going to go first. With a slight tilt of her head, she gave Kirmani lead and he went up the three crooked concrete steps first. This time, she fell into step with him.

Kirmani had been her partner for almost ten years now. He was the first rookie Captain Hackett had given her to train and over those ten years she had seen him get better and better at the job. He had a great eye for detail and a way with everyday people. He didn’t like the super wealthy, but sympathized with the poor and homeless.

“Looks like he came through the back, boss,” Kirmani said when she joined him in the kitchen where their latest vic lay on the floor in a pool of blood. “Smashed the screen door and blitzed her.”

“Second one in two months.” She frowned as she scanned the familiar scene. “We might have a serial after all.”

“And just when the job was getting boring too. The winter slump is a killer.”

She snorted, one corner of her mouth tipping up for a second before she schooled her features again. Kirmani had that way about him, faced with tragedy and death he found a way to make a crack. All cops had a sense of gallows humor but she’d never met anyone who was as quick with it as Kirmani. He handled the job, stayed focused and rarely gave up on a case. The only sore spot between them was Dresden, but this was just another act of normal violence. They’d get along fine on this one.

“Well, boss, now you’ve got lead on a serial. That ought to keep you busy,” she said, discreetly giving him another chance to close a big one, rise a little higher in the department and maybe get that Sergeant’s promotion he’d been looking for.

He was her partner, a good one. She could turn this one over to him because she knew he’d handle it. She’d made sure of that when she trained him.
