Murphy walked through the crowd of uniforms outside the Drake Hotel with a slight scowl. She didn’t need this many uniforms but as long as they stayed outside her crime scene she couldn’t force them out. The problem with having a death at such a prominent location, everyone wanted to see what was going on.

“We’re up on the 12 floor, boss.” Kirmani said as he met her in the lobby. “Manager’s throwing a fit about us being here, but I told him how much we cared about his opinion.”

“What have we got?” she asked, already planning how to deal with a tempermental manager and a case that was going to gather media attention. This one was not going to be pleasant.

“No hearts exploding this time.” Kirmani sounded incredibly grateful for that. “A guy staggered out into the hallway, bleeding pretty bad. One of the neighbors was a doctor, tried to help the guy but apparently, having a doctor in the house didn’t do him any good.”

“Is the ME here yet?”

“Nope, but our good Samaritan doctor thinks it was a .22.”

She rolled her eyes. Great, an amateur detective, this just got better and better. “Secure the body. No one touches it until the coroner gets here. You start searching the room with CSU, I’ll talk to the good doctor.”

Kirmani shook his head, “You’re gonna have a field day with this guy, boss.”

Murphy shot him a look as she got off the elevator and got her first look at her crime scene. The victim had staggered from his room a pretty good distance. There was blood spatter along most of the hallway. She spotted her witness sitting outside the crime scene tape, a rather annoyed looking uniform standing over him.

She made her way over and jerked her chin to dismiss the uni. “I’m Lieutenant Connie Murphy,” she said, studying the man. “I’m lead investigator for this case. Can you tell me what happened?”
