Just Muse Me: Returning

"Get mad, then get over it." - Colin Powell

“So, I heard your ex was getting remarried,” Kirmani said, glancing over at her from the passenger seat. They were stuck in the thick morning traffic on Lake Shore Drive, trying to get down to Hyde Park. They were moving at a crawl when they moved at all. They had spent most of the drive discussing their cases, including their latest headache, the armored truck robbery. They hadn’t been talking for a few minutes though. Kirmani must have gotten bored with the silence.

Murphy propped her elbow on her door and leaned her head in her hand. “Yup.”

“You okay with that?”

“Why wouldn’t I be? He’s not remarrying me.” She rolled her eyes.

At this point, she was just tired of talking about it. Her weekend with Anna had been great. They had gone to the beach, cooked hot dogs on the grill and spent the day like any single mother and her daughter would. Then it had been time for her to go back to her dad and his fiancée and Anna had started asking difficult questions again.

She had tried her best to answer them, but she still had no idea if her answers were the right ones. What she did know was that Anna seemed more comfortable with the idea and the idea that she was going to have a step-mom. It was all Murphy wanted. Her kid was okay. Her ex wasn’t calling her, demanding answers or explanations and Lisa wasn’t trying to make friends with her. Life was going back to normal.

Kirmani shrugged. “My cousin went on a rampage when she heard her ex-husband was getting remarried. She torched his car.”

“Do I look like the type to torch a car?” She looked over at her partner with an eyebrow raised.

“N’aw, you’re more direct. You’d shoot him.” Kirmani smirked, causing Murphy to shake her head at him. Her partner was often an annoyance and an entertainment at the same time.

“And since you didn’t read any headlines about me getting arrested for murder,” she said, “Everything is fine.”

“Alright boss, but if you ever need to hide a body, let me know. I’ve got some pavers that would be great weights.”
