Please consider the following

1.
Step 1

Determine which model of Zamboni can fulfill your needs. The smallest size features a trailer that easily attaches to a garden tractor. This size is ideal when dealing with smaller ice hockey surfaces around 1,000 to 3,000 square feet. Larger sizes feature a load-sensor function that allows for hands-free steering.
2.
Step 2

Figure out if you want to buy a new or used Zamboni. The difference in cost is obvious (new is pricier and used is less expensive), but you should determine how many years you plan to use the machinery and how often it should be on the ice. If you want brand-new, Zamboni machines bought from the official Zamboni facility have a minimum 8-month waiting period.
3.
Step 3

Take into consideration the functionality of the Zamboni. If you prefer to have it shave ice, pick up shavings and spread water in one operation, you may need to pay more or buy a larger model. Consider the drivetrain type. Most Zamboni machines are four-wheel drive, but pay attention to how many pounds the front and back wheels can pull. The size of the blade is another important function. The longer the blade, the more surface area it can clean.
4.
Step 4

Keep in mind storage location. Many Zamboni machines require heated rooms and decent floor drainage. Ideally the storage room should be near to the hockey rink and on the same level as the ice. Minimize the need for a ramp if possible.
5.
Step 5

Plan for financing. Whether leasing or purchasing, you need a substantial amount of money to afford a Zamboni. The starting price for a new, small unit is approximately $10,000. More advanced models can have six figure prices.
