In Scorched, Lucas' non-canon ability is to create Illusions or "projections". Think of them like "Holograms" - everyone can see them, and they might even look realistic, but once someone tries to touch it, their hand will go right through. Or, if Lucas loses concentration, they will "fizzle" or go "static-y." Lucas will mainly use his power to create fake projections of people, but it'll never be a perfect copy unless he concentrates very hard. These people will only be from his imagination, so, he wouldn't be able to make a projection of someone he has never seen a photograph of or met in person. Since the projection relies on his memory and imagination, sometimes the holograms might appear "uncanny" to the viewer.
As well, he may use his power to alter his environment's appearance or conceal an object, but there are limits to this. First, if he wants to conceal an object, the illusion that surrounds it will need to be the same size or bigger. For example, if he wanted to make his cane look like a sword, the sword's dimensions would have to cover the cane entirely or parts of it would "peek through." Also, it is very hard to "conceal" a moving object, and he will almost never try. It would involve perfect unbroken concentration, even once his power is fully developed.
These "holograms" can speak, but only if Lucas consciously makes them speak by thinking of what their voice might sound like. Because of this, their voices might sometimes be wrong. As well, they can go out of Lucas' sight so long as he has the place where it is headed memorized, but it can't see/interact/speak to anyone or anything.
At first, they'll be slightly transparent, obvious fakes. But over months as he gets better at it, they will get sharper and more opaque, until they look real. Of course, they will seem a bit "odd." Think of it like realistic CGI - close, but still enough to provoke the uncanny valley. That said, the average person won't know they aren't real until they try to touch them, or if they are very sharp-witted. It's absolutely fine to be able to tell that it's a fake if that's IC for your character.
The point of this is so Lucas can continue his little facade. So in the end, he will use these powers to deceive.
