Codas to Decaydance Academy (1/4)

Title: You Are The Daydream In My Eyes

Summary: The first out of four codas to Decaydance Academy . This picks up about a week after the dance at the end of Decaydance Academy. Science teacher, Mr. Toro, called in sick at the last minute, so Spencer offers to substitute for him, whilst simultaneously knowing absolutely nothing about science and hating it a lot. And then Brendon decides to pop in…

Word Count: ~1,600

General Note: I'd say you'd definitely need to read Decaydance Academy to understand what's going on in this ficlet. There's a lot of OCs and everyone has a specific role that you definitely won't understand unless you've read the original fic.

Author's Notes: The sequel is in the works (!!), but I've had this coda planned since the beginning of time when panicatthecobra prompted me with a certain quote said by her father that just makes me want to laugh for days on end but that's just me personally. *shrug*

So…I just want to stay in this 'verse and write Brendon and Spencer having adorable shenanigans together at school forever and ever and ever and ever. (I blame eddis64 for my love of this 'verse, just for the record.)

Title belongs to The Hush Sound's song, Love You Much Better. (I had Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows on repeat whilst writing this one, but I couldn't a good title out of it for the life of me.) Enjoy!

Spencer picked up his cellphone without even looking at the screen. He figured he didn't have to. "Hello," he said, a little bit-not seductively (except it totally was).

"Smitty?"

Spencer pulled his phone away from his face and stared at it. That was most definitely not Brendon. He pressed it back to his ear and returned his attention to the road in front of him. "William?" he half-said, half-asked, bemused. "Why are you calling me?"

"Well, Ray just called in sick, and I can't find anyone from the substitute database who can get here in the next twenty minutes, and…" William trailed off as Spencer realized why William was calling.

Spencer sighed. "I'll cover it William, sure."

"Awesome!" William exclaimed, and Spencer hung up the phone. Spencer acknowledged that secretaries were supposed to be perky in the morning, but jeez, William made Spencer feel like the Scrooge at Christmas time. It made him feel guilty for being grouchy. Brendon's cheeriness gave Spencer a similar guilty feeling in the morning.

Spencer doubled back and stopped to buy himself another cup of coffee from McDonald's.

*

"You have no idea how much that upsets me," Jon said as Spencer walked into the main office, motioning at the half-empty coffee cup Spencer was holding awkwardly in the crook of his elbow.

Spencer set his bag down on the floor and sipped from the straw of his cup, making an annoying slurping noise for emphasis. He said, "I don't care. It's good and cheap," and stuck out his tongue like a nine-year-old.

Brendon picked that exact moment to walk into the office and smirked at Spencer's childlike gesture. Spencer wanted to slap (kiss) the smirk off of Brendon's face.

Jon was smirking too. He mock-huffed, "You are such a prick, Smith," and left the office after passing a glance between Brendon and Spencer.

The two of them were left awkwardly staring at one another for a second, before Brendon took a couple steps, closing the space between them, and pulled Spencer in close for a tight hug. Spencer let his hand slowly trail down Brendon's back before there was a throat-clearing noise. Spencer remembered William.

William held out a manila envelope and waved it around, giving Spencer an impatient face. Spencer raised an eyebrow as he grabbed the envelope and William explained, "It's the class procedure that Mr. Toro emailed in. He was very detailed and very specific and there's like thirty pages."

"Right," Spencer replied, nodding. That made enough sense. They'd only hired Ray Toro to teach Chemistry at the beginning of the current year, but from what Spencer remembered from the few times they'd talked, Ray was very…meticulous. "So…" he said uncertainly.

William rolled his eyes, like he couldn't believe what his life actually was. "Go to the classroom and wait. You'll have students reporting for homeroom soon."

"And if there's anything important that comes up for me?" Spencer asked.

"Like that'll happen," William said, grinning. They both knew that Spencer did next to nothing important around this place.

Well, sort of.

Spencer crossed his arms over his chest and smirked. "Humor me," he said.

"I'll call the classroom," William said, rolling his eyes again. "The same as I do for any other teacher."

"It's true, that's what he does," Brendon piped up. While Brendon hadn't said anything through the conversation, Spencer had been very aware of Brendon's presence in the room. It was a feeling that Spencer hadn't had with someone in a long time - besides Ryan, but saying it like that was just plain creepy - and it made chills run down his spine having to readjust to this feeling of knowing something that intimate, feeling a person.

Brendon plastered himself to Spencer's back, pressing a kiss to the nape of Spencer's neck and whispering there, "I'll see you later, Spence," in a way that was only chaste and not sultry or provocative.

Spencer squeezed Brendon's arm where it was wrapped around his chest and nodded lightly. William groaned and turned his wheelie-chair so his back was facing them and pretended to be very busy with the filing cabinet.

Spencer took the hint, gathered his bag up off the floor, and waved at Brendon as he left. Spencer headed toward the Chem. room, deliberately taking his time with each step.

*

(Because, the truth was, Spencer hated science more than words. Spencer had always hated science as long as he could remember, since when he was a student, and he definitely didn't know anything about science and this day was just going to end up being all around hellish.)

*

By the time fourth period rolled around, Spencer had already spilt some blue chemical on the floor and it had made this awful, scary glugging noise while it pooled there, broken up a fight brewing between Alex DeLeon and Cash Colligan over a spazzy girl named Chrissy, and had developed a throbbing headache.

He used the five-minute passing break between classes to go see Ryan. "Oh, my God," Spencer said, walking into Ryan's classroom and straight to the cupboard that Spencer knew Ryan kept all his 'drugs' in, "it's seriously as awful as I remember."

Ryan made a face as Spencer rummaged through the various bottles. Spencer finally came up with Tylenol and threw back three, dry. Spencer massaged at his temples and Ryan saw that as his permission to mock with a sing-songed, Ha ha.

Spencer flipped him off. "I hate science so much. It's the most ridiculous thing ever."

"Says the guy who believes in the theory of evolution," Ryan quipped. "And, stop stealing my special meds."

"Stop?" Spencer said incredulously. "Today's the first day I've ever stolen some, ever. And plus, you shouldn't have those where the kids could get them. Especially if they're "special."" He made air-quotes with his fingers.

Ryan rolled his eyes. "Spencer," he said in a strangled voice.

"Ryan," Spencer said firmly, "I am your boss. I'm allowed to say things like that."

"You're a hypocrite. And I'm still older!"

Spencer grinned, said, "So?" and left the room.

Ryan was silent as Spencer walked off, but then he popped his head out into the hallway and said, "So to what?"

Spencer laughed to himself and kept walking.

*

When Spencer got back to Ray's room, the phone was ringing. He picked it up, figuring it was William, and said, "Hello?"

Ryan's voice came across clear and sounding oddly frazzled. "So to what, douchebag?"

Spencer chuckled and hung up. Frazzled Ryan was his favorite kind of Ryan.

Especially when it was for absolutely no fucking reason.

*

While visiting Ryan - and stealing painkiller - had brightened Spencer's mood just a little bit, science still sucked and Spencer still had four more classes to instruct.

During fifth period, Brendon's favorite, Elizabeth, and Ian Crawford were lab partners and awkwardly danced around one another, Elizabeth almost tripping over her large lab apron and Ian grinning at her stupidly the whole time. It totally made Spencer nauseous from cute.

Six period hit and Spencer was anxious for lunch - not just getting to see Brendon, he told himself, but also getting away from the smell of science.

Alex Marshall was the first to walk into the room and he promptly went over to Ray's desk and dropped a stack of papers on it. Then he stood beside Spencer and Spencer didn't really think anything of it.

The room filled up slowly and Spencer was kind of sleeping on his feet, bored. The bell rang and Spencer was ready to go through his spiel when Cash Colligan came sauntering in, tardy.

Spencer did a double take as Cash took his seat. "Cash Colligan," he called, "haven't you already been here for Chemistry today?"

"Yesss," Cash said slowly, like Spencer was dumb. "This is the advanced help class."

Spencer turned to Alex Marshall, who was still beside him. Spencer happened to know that Alex had an excellent science average and had scored the highest on the state exams. "Alex Marshall?" he said unsurely.

"I'm the Student Aide," Alex explained.

"Of course," Spencer said. "Like what Mica does with Jon."

Alex nodded. "Exactly that, Principal Smith."

"Okay, well then," Spencer started, turning toward the class before him. But he heard the jostling of the door handle turning and the door opening. Brendon walked in and waved at the students, before sending a blinding smile at Spencer that Spencer felt go all the way down his body and hit at his knees.

"Hello," Brendon said, and Spencer could hear the-darkness, totally different from that morning.

"Go get ready for lab," Spencer dismissed the students, and then walked over to Brendon, whispering, "Yes?"

"Oh, nothing," Brendon said playfully. He darted forward and kissed Spencer, hard. "I was just thinking about you."

Spencer took a clumsy step backward and touched his lips. "Oh?" he said dumbly. Brendon was not going to make him weak-kneed around the kids. Was not.

"Yep," Brendon said, sucking his bottom lip in between his teeth.

Spencer swore inside his head. A lot. Brendon sent him a look and stepped toward the door that led into the hallway.

The empty hallway, Brendon mouthed as if he could read Spencer's mind, and then stepped out.

"Principal Smith?" Cash Colligan said, jogging up to him. "Can I-" he started to say, motioning at the Bunsen burners and chemicals laid out at the lab station. Alex Marshall was sitting at Ray's desk, grading papers.

"Uh," Spencer interrupted, looking between the station, Cash, Marshall, and the door. "Whatever, just don't monkey-fuck with it."

Cash's eyes widened.

Spencer rolled his eyes. He said, "Oh, don't pretend like you've never heard that word before," and he could already hear his voice going a bit breathless.

He waved Cash away and Cash nodded deviously and walked away.

Spencer stumbled out into the hallway.
