CHARACTER NAME: Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
FANDOM: Angel: The Series
CHRONOLOGY: Post-"Deep Down" - 04x01
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: Watcher
ALTER EGO: Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
BACKGROUND:
Magic is real and all those stories you heard as a child about monsters who lurk in dark corners are true. Of course the majority of humans ignore the realities of this dark slice of life, but for those who chose to believe and do something about it their life can be very dangerous...and short. Wesley was born and raised to face this darkness.
Born and raised in England, Wesley would have been seen to have a rather privileged life with strong history behind his family's name. This privileged has come with a heavy responsibility as he was born to a long line of Watchers, those devoted to studying and even fighting the supernatural in our world by their own methods or by aiding the Slayer -- one girl in all the world born each generation with the power to fight the forces of darkness. To be the Watcher of a Slayer is a great privilege even though the Watcher's Council views these young girls as mere tools.
From his very birth Wesley was raised to be a Watcher. His upbringing was very strict and even abusive at times due to his father Roger constantly badgering and critiquing his every move. This made Wesley a very nervous boy especially around the older Pryce. There is a natural desire to do right in him, but there is also a darkness that was created by the resentment he holds towards his father and the Council.
"All those hours locked under the stairs and you still weren't good enough. Not good enough for Daddy, not good enough for the Council."
His life's road chosen for him, Wesley attended an all boys public school run by the Council where he learned how to fight demons as well as arithmetic. Naturally gifted Wesley became the youngest Head Boy in years, something that still wasn't enough to please his father. It wasn't long after leaving the academy that he was sent to Sunnydale, California to replace Rupert Giles as the Watcher to two Slayers, Buffy Summers and Faith Lehane.
Wesley is everything that a proper Watcher is suppose to be which is nothing either girl needs. He's clean cut and proper following the ruled of the Council to a T to a point he drives everyone to dislike his methods and him personally. No one in Sunnydale takes the young man seriously and everyone still follows the orders of Giles much to Wesley's dismay. Faith, the newest Slayer, turns to the dark without Wesley knowing and once he does find out he interrupts her rehabilitation which drives her further to the dark and makes the others completely shut him out.
An angry Buffy, who has fallen in love with Angel a vampire with a soul, severs ties with the Watcher's Council, but instead of returning home Wesley decides to stay in Sunnydale and help the group fight the evil mayor. During the large battle that involves the entire student body Wesley is knocked unconscious and last seen being carted off into an ambulance eventually to be fired by the Council for incompetence. Ashamed of what has transpired and seeing himself as a failure he does not return home but uses all his remaining funds to buy supplies and a motorcycle becoming a Rogue Demon Hunter.
Chasing down a demon he winds up in Los Angeles where Angel the vampire is now working with Cordelia Chase, who has a connection to The Powers That Be. Out of money and with a head full of knowledge the investigation team needs Wesley is brought onto the team filling the spot of the dead half demon Doyle. He proves himself through several investigations and states his loyalty to Angel when the Council comes to him to get him to give up the location of Faith. Despite being kidnapped and tortured by the ex-Slayer Wesley refuses to help permanently severing his ties with the Council.
When Angel finds himself being drawn to his darker self, Angelus, he leaves the team forcing Wesley to take charge which, unlike his time in Sunnydale, he proves very capable of doing. Creating a strong bro-ship with street urchin Charles Gunn they group find themselves in the midst of a zombie police attack which leaves Wesley shot in the stomach while trying to protect Gunn. While Wesley heals Angel returns, but with the condition that Wesley remain as official leader as he (Angel) can't promise to not turn evil on the group.
Once more Wesley is made to feel inferior by his father's hurtful words when he is berated for failing to return to the Council and instead putting his loyalties to the enemy -- a vampire. Angel is also still seen and treated as the leader by those that know the group shaking Wesley's confidence. When the group goes to rescue Cordelia from a demon dimension Wesley is placed as the leader of the human rebellion against the demon population. Here he shows his willingness to sacrifice lives for the greater good.
"If you try not to get anybody killed you end up getting everybody killed."
During their adventure Angel finds and brings home Winifred "Fred" Burkle, a UCLA grad student who fell into the demon dimension five years ago. She's slightly crazy from her time as a slave and being tossed into a reality she never thought possible. Fred is also very attractive to both Wesley and Gunn, and is herself a genius of math and science. The romantic feelings between Fred and Wesley begin to come to a head, but he's pulled to the dark side when a supernatural influence nearly makes him kill Fred. Ashamed of his actions Wesley pulls away from Fred which allows for Gunn to step in and woo the woman.
Angel's ex Darla, the woman who transformed him into a vampire, arrives and gives birth to Connor an impossible child. During this time Angel is hunted by Holtz a former victim of his demon days whose family he brutally killed. Working with a demon the man is able to convince Wesley to kidnap the baby by revealing a prophesy that states: The Father will the Son. Despite doing everything to prove the prophesy wrong Wesley comes to the conclusion that Angel will kill Connor and he must stop his friend from committing a murder that would destroy him. While stealing the baby away Wesley is attacked by Justine, a follower of Holtz, and his throat is slashed while Holtz takes the baby into a hell dimension.
In the hospital the group comes to see Wesley only for Angel to attempt to kill him for betraying the team and losing Connor to Holtz. Angel's final threat to Wesley is death should he see the man again. Fred is suitably hurt that Wesley never told anyone on the team about the prophesy which was since discovered to have been created by the demon working with Holtz. Wesley is crushed mentally as he is ostracized by the entire team.
"And I also wanted to say I thought what Angel tried to do to you was wrong. And I'm sorry. But he was right to blame you, Wesley. You should have come to us. You should have trusted us instead of going to Holtz behind our back.
You were supposed to be our friend and you didn't even . . . If Angel sees you again, he'll kill you, Wesley. This time for real. Don't come back to the hotel. Ever. The prophecy was false. Angel was never gonna hurt Connor. It was all for nothing."
Filled with guilt and self-loathing Wesley begins an affair with Lilah Morgan, a lawyer that works for the evil demon friendly law-firm Wolfram & Hart. Creating his own team and using more brutal methods Wesley continues to fight evil. When Connor returns as a teenager from Hell (literally) Wesley gains a brief touch of happiness that the child he lost was not dead. Connor turns out to have been tainted with stories from Holtz about Angel and he locks his father in a glass coffin and dumps him in the ocean. At the same time Cordelia is given the chance to ascend by The Powers That Be leaving only Fred, Gunn, and the demon singer Lorne to fight evil and find Angel.
Secretly Wesley has been searching on his own having kidnapped Justin who helped Connor lock Angel up. Wesley keeps the woman locked in a small cage in his closet and brings her along at night to look for Angel. When the pair finds the coffin Wesley frees Angel and feeds him from his own arm. Hallucinating from months of starvation Angel promises to never forgive Connor, but Wesley mistakes Angel's promise for Wesley himself and leaves Angel with the team without a word. The much colder and more serious Wesley refuses to return to the team, but he also refuses Lilah's offers of employment with her law-firm. Occasionally he lends help or information to Angel, but his contact with his former team is limited and strained.
Gunn: What happened to you, man?
Wesley: I had my throat cut and all my friends abandoned me.
PERSONALITY:
In his heart of hearts Wesley remains a tiny schoolboy searching for attention and approval from his father and/or father figure. He faces everything with serious intensity which is what makes him the go-to man for all things needing research. With his unparalleled knowledge about demons, language, and magic he has proven himself time and time again. Despite this he still has a deep self-loathing which makes its appearance most noticeably when he is cut off from the team. His obsession with knowledge can lead him to not taking care of his personal wellbeing and makes others see him as bookish and weak; until he joins Angel Investigations this is fairly true, but once he's given a leadership role and approval he really shows how capable he is.
Sometime in being a leader he makes hard decisions always looking out for the greater good. There is a ruthlessness about him which makes a small appearance during his time as Buffy's Watcher when he willingly chooses to sacrifice Buffy's friend Willow in an effort to keep the mayor from gaining a step on his road to evil and chaos. Once Wesley joins Angel's team he shows this ruthlessness more clearly when he leads the human rebels into battle and again when he's on his own after betraying the team. Overall he isn't a truly cruel man, but he does believe and understand that sometimes to fight evil one must make what others would see as evil decisions. He does care about human life, but he also knows that this world cannot survive the constant attack of evil if people refuse to make the hard and painful decisions.
Wesley is genius smart, ruthless, and painfully unconfident in himself. Yes, he can and will face a horde of demons with a grim determination and confidence, but inside he's still that fearful schoolboy. His team is his family and when they abandon him he loses an important part of himself. Wesley has grown up a lot from his days in Sunnydale, but that growth has come at a cost. He is darker inside and he is lonely. He is ruled by his own rules taking his happiness and even his life for granted. Alone he believes he truly has nothing left to give or lose except the good fight.
POWER:
- Canon -
Wesley is an average human male with exceptional fighting skills gained during his time working with Angel against demons far more powerful than himself. He is an expert marksman with both gun and crossbow and also an expert with a sword. Academically he has a superior knowledge of most things especially when it comes to demons and language (both human and demon). He has a learned ability with magic with the darker magic coming most easily to him. His talent for magic will become far more powerful in City.
- Magic -
Magic in the Buffy'verse, or as it's called Magicks, deals with manipulating supernatural and natural forces. Although some have an innate magical ability it can also be learned (it should be noted that everything in the Buffy'verse has a touch of magic). It cannot truly create, but it can transform and transfer energy. There are two forms of magics: dark and light. The darker the magic the more addictive it becomes to the user. Although Wesley uses a lot of dark magic he is never shown becoming addicted like the character Willow possibly because he is more in touch with his own inner darkness.
Wesley is known by demons and others who know of the demon world as a warlock (05x21). Although magic users in the Buffy'verse do not need to wave wands about to perform magic depending on the spell they may need the aid of potions and/or talismans. Much of magic involves ritual as it is connected to the demon worlds. A properly trained magic user can use magic through sheer will. The more a magician trains the more powerful this magic will become. This magic can be used for simple telekinesis to summoning energy (05x22 Wesley summons a ball of fire silently).
Magic in the Buffy'verse also take a physical toll on the user as the long and more powerful a spell is the more it will take out of the person. Exceptionally dark magic can physically alter a user even for a short time such as turning the castor's eyes pure black and/or altering the castor's voice.

COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
[The speaker cracks on and a deep, proper English voice speaks up. No, not proper. The owner of this voice has spent far too many years surrounded by Californian's for his accent to remain truly English.]
Hero is such a big word, don't you think? Quite full of itself which is probably why so many so-called heroes are also quite full of themselves.
Now don't be offended as I'm more than positive that many of you are very down to earth in your thinking and behavior. I do however wonder if the simple utterance of this word in association with you has changed your outlook. Do you strive to do better knowing that you are expected to leap tall buildings in a single bound? Or maybe you're the sort to slink off into the shadows after saving the damsel in distress. I think I quite prefer the shadows myself.
[There's a long pause as the speaker comes back to the present. He clears his throat and sighs heavily. There's so much being said and yet still so much that this person wants to say. He doesn't though because he's used to not being heard and why break with tradition?]
So my fellow heroes is there a card I should have printed off or is this more of a suggested occupation? In all honesty I'm fairly exhausted with having my future set out before my without my say-so. Personally I'm thinking of opening up a little antique shop and to hell with this hero business.

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
Wesley stood confidently back-to-back with Buffy, the Slayer who had rejected him for his own good. They fought together instead of against each other something he would have given anything for a lifetime ago, but he didn't get second chances. Even this was all a facade. Once she knew truly knew what he had done to her love this so-called second chance would vanish and he would once more be persona non grata. That was alright; he was used to doing for himself now. Still, the thought of losing even this touch of home tugged on him in a way he didn't expect.
Betrayer. Judas would be proud. Wesley lived in shame and every moment hurt. He had lost the only real family he had ever had and now he was forced to continue on knowing that they were just out of reach back home. Being in this world he could allow himself to forget what he had lost even as he interacted with Buffy, but he wouldn't allow himself that luxury. This continued existence in the shadow of his guild was his redemption. He'd fight the good fight and then he'd go home and look at himself in the mirror knowing that it hadn't been enough to erase the fact he'd betrayed those closest to him. It seemed Angel had taught him well in those years since finding him.
Guilt could be all consuming, but it could also drive you to do better. At this point Wesley didn't believe things could really become all that worse. Well, he supposes he could have ended up in a Hell dimension instead of some parallel Earth dimension. He also could still be the simpering coward of Buffy's memories, but then she probably wouldn't have joined him for this fight. Probably. That's the thing about being a White Hat -- one just never knew when to quit. Moving into a better position Wesley unfolded his hidden sword and took a moment to hope that this wouldn't be his official pink slip from playing hero. He still had a lot of guilt to work off.
