Right Under Your Nose

Rimmer eyed the man with suspicion. He was quite tall, and was wearing a leather jacket. He looked human, to Rimmer at least. With two legs, two arms, two eyes, and no funny skin colour, if the guy was anything but a human, then Rimmer wasn't buying it.

"He's an alien, Rimmer!"

The man in question, who had introduced himself as the Doctor, let his lips form a tiny smile as he raised a hand in greeting. The move looked sarcastic, if that were even possible.

"Do you think I'm going to fall for that, again?" Rimmer asked, raising an eyebrow at Lister. "Just so you can parade around in your curry stained boxers and wave around that ridiculous banner you made from the cleanest of your used socks?" Scoffing and turning his attention back to the puzzle he was currently making one of the scutters do, Rimmer tried to focus on anything other than the stranger. The Doctor wasn't exactly friendly looking and, whatever he was, be it an android, hologram, or something else, Rimmer wasn't in the mood to converse with someone who'd agreed to play along with Lister's little joke.

He heard a sigh come from behind him.

"Rimmer-"

"I'm not listening."

"Ri-"

Covering his ears with his hands, Rimmer began humming the first song he could think of. It did a grand job of blocking out the other noises in the room, and Rimmer let a smug grin rise onto his lips.

Lister shook his head.

"He's obsessed with aliens," Lister commented, turning to the Doctor with a smirk. "You'd think he'd be happy to actually meet one, eh?" He could not believe that Rimmer was being this idiotic. Lister knew his friend could be stupid at times, but this was ridiculous.

The Doctor shrugged. He needed to get going, since he had forgotten to tell the young blonde that his ship was also a time machine. Though it was a long shot, he knew he might as well tell her, just to see if she would change her mind and travel with him.

Plus, he didn't want to spend any more time on this ship. He'd only landed here by accident, and although the hologram was a brilliant piece of technology, and the Cat a fascinating change in feline evolution that he hadn't come across before, the actual company of everyone onboard wasn't exactly... pleasant.

Also, the guy named Rimmer was annoying him severely.

"I better get going," the Doctor said, giving a nod. His expression left no room for argument. He had things to do, places to be, and an amazing girl to get back to. Ignoring Lister's protests and gritting his teeth together to stop the remark that wanted to escape as Rimmer continued making a loud noise, the Doctor let a sigh pass out his mouth. Shaking his head at the absurdity of this ship and its tiny crew, the Doctor knew that, under other circumstances, he probably would have offered to help the men get back to Earth. It seemed they were all doing fine, though, and the Doctor understood that he honestly didn't have the patience. Not right now, anyway.

"Was nice meeting you," Lister offered, as a farewell.

The Doctor forced himself to smile. "You too."

It was a lie, yes, but that couldn't be helped. There were some people he just could not bring himself to want to meet more than once, unfortunately.
