more thoughts

The last time we saw you, you looked so much older. Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder.

So, first preference: painting.

Makes sense, it’s what I wanted. And when I told Nellie that I was thinking of doing sculpture instead, she went all “You can do everything in painting!! You don’t even have to paint!! Half of the graduate show is sculpture!!” There’s a third year painting major with an installation exhibition at Heidi, installation; the sort that creeps through and alters the space. That’s what I want to be doing; big paintings that go from the ceiling and onto the floor and have to be piled up at the opposite wall. Or installations of found objects, photos, drawings, where there is NO painting. Or tiny paintings, and etchings, and drawings. All hung up and dangling at eye sight.

So? Painting first. Doesn’t make sense otherwise. It’s the most competitive major, and I can always change my mind if I don’t want it.

After that. Sculpture? Tad? Photomedia? The work I want to do now isn’t reliant on photomedia skills, but I’m still in love with the illusion of photomedia. And altering images, undermining the index. But id there room for installation? Do I want to be a practising photographer? I don’t know. I really don’t know. I just want beautiful colours and sensation and thoughts and illusion. I just want to read and write and make art. Why isn’t there a major called “read and write and make art.” ? But sculpture will let me play with my number one current obsession: material.

Two minutes left and I’m stuck. Really. Do not know. Maybe I should look at the graduate shows?

art school, monash, photos, painting, tad
