long-time-no-post.
It was great to see that T updated you with
http://www.buyblue.org. it really is a fabulous site.
now, i will proceed to the part where i explain going-ons of the last week.
Last weekend, PJ and i celebrated our one-year (the first year relationship i've ever made, ha!) by going out to dinner at the fabulous vegetarian Candle Cafe and delectable Serendipity 3. As usual, we ate too much - but had a very good evening.
Sunday marked the beginning of a one-week crash course in mouse transgenics. I had up to four lectures a day, and was trying to keep some semblance of my research underway throughout. I realized once again that it is hard attending lectures regularly - and it's even more difficult when what you are hearing is actually applicable to your work. Anybody care to hear a lecture on pre- and post- implantation mouse development?
So, with that in the background of the week, Wednesday night, a friend gave PJ and myself tickets to a rendition of Handel's Messiah playing at Lincoln Center. We had a friend in the chorus, so the show was that much more amazing knowing that she was working it. Apparently our (decent, but not fabulous) seats were worth $97 a piece. It still astounds me how much people will pay for some things - but granted the show was great.
For Thursday night, PJ got us tickets to see 'Slava's Snowshow' at the Union Square City. For those who have seen Cirque de Soleil, it's essentially an entire blue-man-group-like show based upon the crazy master-of-ceremony-type-guys from CdS. Honestly, again, a ton of fun, and beautiful and i've had the single 'Blue Canary' in my head ever since.
Last night - i finally saw The Pixies. i'm really really glad i went, but i think a lot of that came from a horrible analogy i came up with about the show before it started. See, in the past, i could appreciate a few songs by Billy Joel (and by Abba) but neither group could kick it up for me like The Pixies. Well, within the last several years on Broadway, both Billy Joel and Abba have put together shows that highlight their music and put on a (apparently) good show for their fans. The Pixies have yet to stoop so low - but at the same point, they aren't doing anything really new - just the classic, very old, but classically good music. Last night was like going to a retrospective show of their hits - maybe a bit more moshing, beer and pot than at 'Movin' Out' or "Mamma Mia' - but, i'm not complaining. They played my old favorite 'Hey' which rocked. They played 'Gigantic' for the encore, they played 'Wave of Mutilation' .. twice. No 'River Euphrates' for me, but i got over it. The crowd was weird, but whatever. i've seen them, i've decided that Kim Biel is my "soccer mom" hero and yeah - woo hoo! saw the Pixies!
Now, tomorrow, i have a huge experiment to run, have to discuss my qualifying exam abstract with my PI (who is CERTAIN to rip it apart as destroying people is what he does best), have to make sure the departmental holiday party runs without a hitch (long-story-short, i got stuck being one of two planners), have to get everyone's cookie plates together, and worry that PJ doesn't explode his oven while trying to make baked brie for his party tomorrow.
man - oh - man.
coming to Minnesota on Tuesday.
