A Running Post

This early morning was a good one. Yesterday, I noticed my body aches had subsided so I decided to run again. And so today before the sun started to shine, I went out and ran nonstop for a good two hours. Running without middle east heat and seeing many grass and trees was nice for a change. I went farther than I originally intended to and despite the distance and slightly steep uphills, I did not get tired. It was as if I was just walking, and I don't get tired by just walking. I kept a steady pace, speeding up at different points, especially toward the end when I was running like those twenty-something male runners from the Muscat Roadrunners who I fancily thought were running like horses, knees high up in the air. (Note to self: I better practise my fast running more or else my ribcage will suffer.) When I got home, I didn't even drink water (I don't get thirsty easily). I just went straight to the shower.

I ran through six roads, each one twice. By the time I was on my fifth road, my knees and feet were starting to feel the pressure, but no pain, no gain. I passed La Salle Zobel, Alabang Country Club, Maria Montessori, and St. James church, all landmarks considerable distances apart. If I only knew how many kilometres that totals to. Let's see... Somewhere near 18 kms? My, that cannot be. My goal is 20 kms! And I was thinking I'm still far from my goal! Oh, dear. Alas, I'm just a newbie runner. A neophyte, if you will. I have yet more practice and training to go through. I accept the fact that maybe I may not be as good as my dad, who has been running marathons since his youth, but like what a fellow Muscat roadrunner told me and what I always thought to myself as encouragement, I have youth on my side. :)

So I'm greatly satisfied that after three nights and two mornings of not running (five times in a row!), I got to run again. And with great improvement from the last time. Before this morning, I ran three mornings ago, the morning after I decided to run regularly again and ran 1 1/2 hours for the first time in a while the previous night. That last morning I ran, I ran for only an hour and I was getting tired easily. What a big change it is to see myself this morning running for two hours straight without getting tired. I can still remember how genuinely ecstatic I was when I ran for the first time in over two weeks. It was evening, I was running on the road and I was thinking, "I'm inhaling car fumes, but I'm happy."

Running makes me happy. :)

This sport is only for well-disciplined people who are willing to get hurt and sacrifice in training, not as easy as it looks. -my marathon-running dad
