I just got back from a very, very eventful weekend (not to mention some running that I hope is not responsible for my sore back and ribs, yikes). But before I post pictures from the exciting weekend, let me make an overdue post. Last year, in December, I decided to take pictures of some of the artwork I did in the past (others were lost or meant to be given as gifts)- a way to immortalise my presently neglected old pieces of art. Yes, at some point in the past, I was very much into making fine art. Oil painting, for one, was a hobby, but is also something I love to do. If only I could get new materials and find the inspiration. I haven't painted in a while. I used to make paintings as gifts. Now all I can do is look at my old paintings (which currently grace the walls and where-evers of my house) and think of how I used to paint. Below are pictures of some of my previous work.
Here is how one part of my house looks, with all the paintings I made in my early teens.
Paintings 2000-2003
+ Some Other Artwork
(still life, nature, portrait, mixed media, abstract, etc.)
Still Life:
Green Apple
Oil on Canvas
This was my first ever oil painting. I started taking a workshop when I was 14. I painted a lot in primary school, but this was the first time I experienced painting with oil colour. This obviously is a green apple. How cliche that my first oil painting would be of a fruit.
Flowers in a Vase
Oil on [Framed] Canvas
I painted these at the workshop after the apple. I guess the first thing we did was still life. I think I was going to add to the white vase (what's there is just my rough outline or something), but that didn't happen.
Nature:
Nature Wonders
Oil on [Framed] Canvas
The one on the left is a much bigger canvas. I used a postcard as reference and because it was what I fancied that time, I painted a window frame over the whole thing (so it can look like you're looking out the window! LOL). My workshop instructor back then, Kata Antonio, pointed out it looked like 4 smaller, individual paintings. Ha ha. The right one speaks for itself. I painted a waterfall!
Other:
Random Objects
left: egg tempera on canvas; right: oil on canvas
For the painting on the left, I just painted a horse in a nature setting. I had a small wooden horse figure as my model. Looking at my picture of that painting now, I'm just reminded of
Charlie the Unicorn. The one on the right is just something I did in my free time. Ack, I can't believe I painted something so colourful. Actually, all these paintings are really bright and colourful. Oh, my.
Outdoor:
At the Park
Oil on Canvas [Sheet]
My small workshop group once had an outdoor painting session at Narra Park, Ayala Alabang Village. We set up our easels and everything. Every time someone passed by, they'd ask whether I was joining a contest. What the heck. Ha ha.
Portraits:
Jesus and Mary
Oil on [Framed] Canvas
Here's a double portrait I ended up painting upon the request of a helper we had back then. She gave me a picture of Jesus and Mary and told me I should paint it or something. So perhaps having nothing else to do at the time (and maybe wanting to accept a portrait challenge), paint it I did!
Females
Oil on [Framed] Canvas
The left was my first ever portrait. I was so scared to paint a face, but Kata told me I shouldn't be afraid to. My first shot at portraiture ended up not being so bad (heck, when I was a kid, I liked to sketch faces). Only thing is, I had brought a picture of my younger sister (who, take note, does not look like me in any way) as reference and as I was walking around the mall with the painting (my workshop was also in the mall), people kept saying it looked like me. Come to think of it, the painting does somehow resemble me. How creepy. And the one on the right, believe it or not, was inspired by Britney Spears' spoiled superstar character in her music video "Lucky." Ha ha ha ha.
Little Boys
Oil on Canvas [Sheet]
The left I actually painted for a project in one class in high school. I called it "The Child" and used a picture of my then 2-year old brother as reference. Ha ha. The one on the right is my portrait of a child in front of a painting of a red-and-white Santa Claus. I made it with the help of a book on making oil portraits and I kind of slaved for this so I'm proud of this work. :)
Mixed Media:
Fragmented Sun, Flowers, and Beanstalks
Mixed Media on Canvas
These pieces were made from various materials. The sun one was made with felt paper. The flowers are actually pieces of cut-up used cloth put together. The beanstalks one actually has crushed egg shells on it (for texture) and was indeed inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk.
Abstract:
Fly Away
Oil on [Framed] Canvas
My mum had always wanted me to make a painting for the house. So one day, she came home with 2 very large pieces of framed canvas. I brought them to my room and they nearly covered all of my small floor space. The walls of the inside of my house are yellow so I decided to use a lot of yellow plus some blue and bits of purple and orange. I had pre- drawn and coloured on a piece of paper. I then painted the drawing (with some modifications) on the huge canvasses, using up a lot of oil colour in the process. I finished the whole thing in a matter of minutes and left it in my room to dry as my family went out of town for a couple of days. If you went to my 18th rock birthday bash, you'd have seen this two-canvas painting on display in front of the stage in the bar.
Poster Colour:
Scapes
Poster Paint on Paper
I was in the art club in high school and these were some of what I came up with. A seascape and a cityscape.
Others:
Fire and Fairy
left: oil pastel on paper; right: oil pastel on [black specialty] paper (for oil pastel)
The one on the left is just some random thing I came up with for high school art club. It says: "Life is about passion. Live for what you love. Think of all your actions. Do more than enough."- another one of my supposedly inspirational rhymes, since I was into making rhymes that time. Ha ha. And the one on the right was something I made just last year to put up at work. I was fascinated with fairies and had a fairy calendar. Ha ha. (The hand was so hard to draw!)
And then I decided to put some random doodles and stuff on a bulletin board...
There you also see a mask I decorated.
Closeups...
Right: There is my blue-pen sketch of a rocking horse. I really liked to sketch. Until now, I still sketch and draw from time to time. I've travelled with a small sketchpad, which I acquired after getting tired of drawing and sketching on blank journal pages.
And that wraps up a sampling of my artwork from the past. These days, the only art I do are the drawings on my sketchpad. Ha ha! I hope to paint again, but maybe not for now. I get lazy. :p And now that I've put on my blog pictures of some of my previous art, I may next put up some of the pictures I took for my basic photography class last semester [my final grade in the course is 3.75 (97-98%)]. Stay tuned. :)
