Authors who hate fan fiction...

...Really? Seriously?

There is a post  http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/68332629.html?mode=reply that includes a list of authors who comment on how they feel about fan fiction. It includes J.K. Rowling who, whatever her failings, is okay with it as long as it remains PG-rated ( oh bless your heart J.K. that ship has SOOOOO sailed ) and Anne Rice, Ursula K. LeGuin, Orson Scott Card, and George R.R. Martin who hate it.

Really?

I understand reservations about it possibly impinging on your livelihood. I really do. And I respect that you cannot make money writing fan fiction. It would just be wrong. ( So it'll be interesting to see just how far Fifty Shades of Grey goes ). But to tell me that I can't write it all?

Might I remind all of those anti-fan fic authors that if it wasn't for fan fiction Star Trek would have NEVER turned into the franchise juggernaut it remains today. I think it's most unwise to piss off your fans unnecessarily.

In the lengthy comments that followed that post, someone posted a comment from Joss Whedon ( whom I've met and who was WONDERFUL ) who said your characters are your kids "they grow up and talk back to you" I would think any author would be pleased to see that, as long as no one is hurting their income, their readers took their universe and found so much richness in it they just ran with it.

Thankfully, I read NONE of the authors who are anti. And I USED to feel bad about that fact.

NOT anymore.
