Flower

"Shh!" said Dennis. "They don't like too much noise!"

"I'm keeping quiet," Natalie whispered back. "You're the one being loud."

"I am not! Oh, now I am." Dennis smiled sheepishly. "Come on." He carefully approached the large dark purple bush. "They're really venomous! One sting can fell a grown man in seconds." He reached out to tickle a leaf.

"Er, then should you be doing that?" Natalie asked.

"It's okay, they like it!" Dennis said. "It's what makes them open up."

"Are you showing off?" asked Natalie, suspiciously.

"No?" tried Dennis, not looking around. "Look! Here we go! It's opening! Isn't that amazing?"

In the middle of the purple plant was a firey flower, glittering bright in the evening dark.

"Wow," said Natalie. "What does it do?"

"...it looks pretty?"

There was a long silence.

"Dennis," said Natalie thoughtfully, "you could just have asked me to Hogsmeade like an ordinary person."

"I did!" Dennis said. "You said the only way you'd go out with me is if there was nobody else left. Or I grew another foot! In height, not a third foot!"

"Oh, yeah, I forgot about that," said Natalie.

There was another long silence.

"It really is a very pretty flower," she said.

Dennis beamed.
