It took her several days to recover after learning she had had a torrid affair with a pirate. After that little story, though, and the one about the burning temple, she started to collect the rumors.
Oh, not obviously of course. She listened to the girls and filled in the pieces when they fell into a hush at her entrance. She asked Shaydra, when the moment seemed right, what some of the other stories were, and did not have to feign being flustered when Shaydra told her. None of it had even come close to the truth, and she wasn't going to say how near they had come to any of it, except for want of time and sense.
Anyway, she thought Mal rather might enjoy being a pirate.
After things calmed down on Serenity and people were ready to start smiling again, she pulled them out and looked them over. She and Mal had spent those few days walking around each other on tip-toes, and she didn't think either of them were entirely sure where they stood with each other anymore.
Rather than wait for them to be locked in her shuttle, though, she called him in after they were in space, after a day or so. He shot her an inquiring look as she shut the door.
"Apparently," she said, keeping her face as straight as she could. "I've been having a torrid affair with a pirate."
"A what with a who?"
She chuckled. "I asked that same question," she told him, and handed him the stories. "Shaydra was particularly fond of the one in the burning temple."
