"Open your eyes." His leaned in close to whisper in her ear, as much for effect as to breathe her in, just a touch.
She did, slowly and her indrawn breath was gift enough. The smile nearly undid him, as she beamed at him.
"It's gorgeous!"
He chuckled and stepped back from her leaning against one of the cavern's walls.
The flickering light from the torches he'd lit hit and sparkled off of the jewel studded walls. Rubies, diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, opals, topaz. They reflected the light back in a rainbow of colors dancing across the smooth stone floor.
"Do you have any idea what this is worth? I mean, just one of those diamonds would totally set you up in an awesome penthouse off of Central Park."
She turned to smile at him and it occurred to him that she sparkled just as much as any of the gems.
"Then pick one."
She blinked, and stared at him.
"You're joking."
He shook his head, smiling.
"You're not joking."
He watched her, amused, as she wandered the cavern, touching the gems.
"You might want to try breathing at some point." It was a soft suggestion, and she flushed a little but let out the breath she'd been assiduously holding.
"I can't choose. There's just too many."
"Well if you don't want one..."
She whirled on him, hands on her hips. "Oh my god, are you serious? Of course I want one. I just don't know which one. This is so much better than Tiffany's."
He had no idea who Tiffany might be, but he moved across the floor and pulled a dagger from his waist to pry a stone out of the wall.
"They sometimes grow together, so you get two different stones intertwined. Those are Midir's favorite."
"Well, d'uh. Two for the price of one is always better."
He chuckled under his breath and then turned back to her the stone in his hand.
"Open your hands." She did, perfectly trusting, holding them out.
He dropped the stone, or rather stones, into her palms. A sapphire and a diamond, twisted together. She gasped and he smiled down at her.
"I can't take this...it's too much."
He tilted his head, frowning, not understanding how something so simple as a pretty stone could be too much.
"It matches your eyes," he said with a small shrug. "The color and the sparkle. No one else should have it."
She looked at it in wonder for a long minute then threw her arms around him. "Thank you so so much. I've never seen anything so lovely."
Neither had he.
