Summary: Sunlight and differences

It's cold when Robin wakes, though granted not as cold as it could be, not as cold as it should be, because Much has an arm wound round his waist, hand curled over the edge of his hip and Much is always warmer than Robin, always. He's breathing into the side of Robin's neck, slow and deep and lost in the skin. Robin has, at some point, tilted into it until his nose is pressed against the edge of Much's temple. Judging by the ache in his neck they have been sleeping this way for some time.

They would have slept for a lot longer, but someone was kicking Robin's boot. He shifts his head sideways and Much grumbles complaint into his hair, he'll be awake soon enough too. Allan has clearly decided to kick him again, possibly unsure if being glared at constitutes 'awake' for Robin.

"What?"

"Marian's here." Allan tells him. Robin sighs and untangles himself from Much, who is most definitely awake now and already complaining about the cold. He leaves him, reluctantly, and wanders down to the cave mouth.

Marian is standing in the middle of their campsite, horse reins held in one pale hand. She looks beautiful and determined in the early morning light.

"Judging by your hair I woke you up." Robin makes no attempt to flatten it, which Marian looks thoroughly amused about.

Much wanders over wearing only one boot, takes Marian's horse by the reins and leads it away with barely a glance at Robin.  Robin, for his part, tries to pretend he wasn't looking for one.

"I know it's early, I expected you'd be up and about already, being a hardened outlaw."

"Even hardened outlaws have to sleep." Robin says from under his hair and Marian retruns his smilw with the sort of amusement that isn't suited to forest mornings at all.

Robin looks sideways to where Much is petting Marian's horse, fingers drifting through it's mane, and he's talking to it in a soft loose voice, that's too low to hear, it's just a gentle murmur in the background. After a pause Much turns his head and looks at him over the animal's shoulder, smiles at him in a way he does so rarely that Robin briefly loses the thread of the conversation.

"More than me sometimes it seems." Marian made it sound almost as if this was a personal triumph. He smiled at her, perfectly willing to let her hold on to the thought.

"You've never seemed to need much sleep."

He turns his head sideways again and Much is still looking at him. He hasn't put his hat on yet and his hair has fallen over his forehead in random uneven lines. His fingers are still moving against the horses coat but this is an entirely different look, an entirely different mood, which, had Marian not appeared this morning, would undoubtedly have resulted in a far more pleasant morning.

If Much looks at him like that again in Marian's presence he will not be responsible for his actions.

"Robin?" Marian prods him with a finger and he resettles his eyes on her face. "You haven't been listening to a word I've said have you?"

"Something about taxes?" Robin guessed. Marian was fond of talking about taxes. But she was scowling at him in a way that suggested no there had been no tax talk this morning. He kept his eyes on her face, which very slowly softened into something curious.

"You're distracted today? Are you sure you were sleeping?" Her expression is blandly curious but Robin has learnt not to underestimate Marian's expressions; which are perfectly capable of hiding the sort of thoughts even Allan might find surprising.

"I was sleeping," he said honestly. "Ask Much." There's a quirk of a smile and Robin realises suddenly that they are talking under the words in almost exactly the same way he has become used to doing with Much.

It makes him smile, makes Marian smile wider and everything is suddenly very interesting indeed.
