Fantasy stories

Have found that my definition of fantasy is obviously different from that of the editors of Fantasy and Science Fiction. We had (in the latest issue) a telepathy story, a vampire story, a werewolf story, a zombie story, a ghost story, a funny mage story, a serious mage story, and a traditional legend-esque story. All of these are fine. I have problems with the delusional drug-addict story. He keeps seeing these witches everywhere, which would make it fantasy EXCEPT that they're from this play that he saw when he was 4. It didn't fit. Bah!

I resubscribed to F&SF to support my student who was selling magazine subscriptions. As a rule, I don't like magazines. Mostly because they are often too full of advertisements. I already see enough ads in my life. And the reward from the rest of the mag doesn't offset the irritation of the ads (as opposed to cable or internet).

I haven't been as happy with the mag as I had hoped I would be. I really enjoy my fantasy stories, but I'm becoming fussier about which ones I read. I really have enjoyed more of Robin McKinley's work lately. She's made up for the horrific scene in Deerskin and the general blah-ness of Rose Daughter. Also have been enjoying Patricia Wrede's 13th Daughter and Tamora Pierce's Bekka Cooper novels. Maybe my problem is that I'm really into "young adult" fantasy rather than other kinds. Hm.
