I'm working on several of the Starfleet Uniforms from Wrath of Kahn, affectionately referred to as the Maroon Monster by fans who've tried to reconstruct it :)
Because there are a variety of resources to draw from this is to help keep them all straight... and make sure I'm doing things consistently on each of the uniforms. It may also be useful for my fellow participants in this mad mischief.
Using the patterns from
Roddenberry.com as a starting point, and additional information from the
Star Trek Uniform Guide and the
Star Trek Uniforms and Costumes Board... this is the progress.
I'm starting with the pants since they have the least amount of adjustment!
I've ignored the pattern's cutting diagram in favor of a slightly more efficient use of fabric.
as you can see on the above unisex pants pattern... unisex means mostly male. These happen to be
cpt_antilles pants, so I'm not too worried but on mine I may have to increase the hip based on their stated pattern measurements. The inseam is long...but I'm going to shorten it appropriately on the body so I can double check the blousing. I have found black ribbing for the cuff. I just need to check quantity and see if another trip to the garment district is needed before mailing it out.
The pattern directions are very brief...I cannot understate the importance of reading them several times.
pktaxwench for your lining you would only need to line these pieces as the branch stripes are basically top-stitched on. I'd flat line them and piece in Not-Wool! of your choice for the top 3 inches of pants.
I think the construction method is a film costuming short cut- to allow for easy removal and replacement of stripes bases on production needs.
Next on to the multitude of strips needed to make the branch stripes.
This is the branch color strip, you need 2 (1.25 inches wide) they say at least 48 long...but what really determines your length is your outseam!
I'm marking with chalk and the metal right angle I steal from the tool box all the time. I like it because it's heavy enough to function as a fabric weight and indestructible enough to be a good guide for the rotary cutter.
Next you need 8 strips of the same length and width of the black gab for the pants.
I'm marking and cutting in groups of 4 so neither the fabric or the cutter get away from me, and so I don't rub the chalk markings off.
That's it for cutting the pants. I'm in the middle of putting together the branch stripes now, and should have more construction info either tonight or tomorrow.
