I just got back from ALA last night. It was a fabulous conference. I don't know that I have the energy to post about everything, but here's some of the highlights
+ carpooling with Erin Blake from the Folger Shakespeare Library
+ hanging out Kim and Joann Friday afternoon, and getting to crash in their hotel room, thereby saving myself a lot of driving and getting me an extra hour and a half of sleep.
+ getting comped on my frou-frou drink at the hotel bar because it took them 15 minutes to get it to our table
+ bumping into Maddie and meeting for lunch
- realizing that I had the wrong hotel written down for my post-lunch meeting, and arriving 20 minutes late, red-faced and sweaty at the Disneyland Hotel
- the one committee that I'm actually *on* is the slowest, most useless committee in the RBMS section (i guess that's why they had openings for newbies like me)
+ RBMS Controlled Vocabularies Subcommittee and Bibliographic Standards Committee meetings were awesome (in a cataloging geek-fest kind of way)
+ bumping into about 10 different former classmates throughout the weekend
+ got front-row seats for the Book Truck Drill Team competition (look for it on youtube)
+ one of my former classmates was on one of the drill teams
+ picked up lots of free books
- came home way too pooped to do anything costumey (on the nights that I came home)
Last night, after arriving home, I hung out with Caprice and Jo and we all worked on our respective costume projects. Everyone is going to look so fabulous! Caprice's outfit looks like liquid silver. I'm so impressed.
I tried to stop off at JoAnn's for more fabric paint on my way over to Jo and Caprice's, but got there about 20 minutes after they had closed (curse you, shorter Sunday hours!) Will try again tomorrow after work, since tonight is belly dancing. It's our last class until the Fall, so we're going to get all decked out in our tribal-esque gear.
Just for my own reference, here's what I have left to do on my LoJ outfit:
-about 3 more hours of painting on the second sleeve
-god knows how many more hours of painting on the skirts
-attach the sleeves
-put eyelets in CB
-make belt
-add about 4 more layers of paper to the mask
-paint mask
For everybody else:
-make sleeves for Andi's tunic
-cut out & assemble Andi's hood/mantle
The goal is basically to finish everything except the skirt painting and the mask by the end of this week. That way, I can bring the mask over to Steve's for the long weekend and work on it while spending some time with him, and then spend all of next week focusing on painting the knotwork. Jo and Caprice have offered their help with the mask and the painting while I work on stuff for them, which will be a tremendous help.
