1. Interpreter of Maladies - Jhumpa Lahiri
2. The Demon's Lexicon - Sarah Rees Brennan
3. Children of Men - PD James
4. The Titan’s Curse - Rick Riordan
5. Hallowed Hunt - Lois McMaster Bujold
6. The Man Who Made Lists: Love, death, madness, and the creation of Roget's Thesaurus - Joshua Kendall
7. The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death - Charlie Huston
There is no real stand-out among these books so I guess I'll pick Mystic Arts because it's a rarity on my reading list. Charlie Huston is, what Ursula and I like to call, a man's man writer -- someone writing from a distinctly masculine POV to which I can't relate. Normally, I would not even finish a book written in that manner but the pulp-crime plot of Mystic Arts was engaging enough that I persevered.
Children of Men is one of those rare books where I liked the movie version better. I think Cuaron et al., made the right call in altering certain characters to make the audience care more about them and changing the plot to make the movie more entertaining.
The Demon's Lexicon is the first novel by a writer whom I originally discovered while looking for Harry/Draco fic. Heh.
sarahtales has since taken down her fanfic but her LJ is still up and is still v. entertaining. Demon's Lexicon is not as enjoyable as her fanfic but that's to be expected since the fic is not weighed down by the world- and character-building that she was obliged to do for her original work. The novel did pick up steam in the latter half and I liked it enough to look forward to the remainder of her planned trilogy.
