I think this is a really great idea to get people donating even pocket change! Copied from another mailing list... I know others have mentioned "things they've done for their charity of choice", I thought I'd mention this!
>I was surfing a Chabad website a few months ago, and I came across "10 things the Rebbe wants you to do" - a "wizard style" (eg. showing you your progress) website that discussed 10 mitzvot. The first one was - make a tzedaka box and put it on your desk. Not lighting candles, not tefillin, not family purity - tzedaka. (see
http://www.chabad.org/article.htm/aid/489148) Here's the text:
Simplest thing you could imagine:
Get an aluminum can with a slit on top. Okay, a small cardboard box could also work.
Put it on your desk at work, where no one can ignore it.
Drop in a few coins.
Wait.
First subject enters, asks, "So what's the deal with the tin can?"
You answer, "It's called a pushka. Just drop in some loose change."
Subject asks, "So where does the money go?"
You answer, "I dunno. Got any ideas?"
Collect the ideas.
When the can is full, send it off to the charity of your choice and replace immediately.
Anyway, this was a great lesson for me, and I wanted to share it with you, especially as Rosh HaShana approaches, and we learn that teshuva, tefilla, and tzedaka are life saving acts...
